You all collectively are dumping on boomers to satisfy a need to blame others for not having what you want or think you deserve. The right wing does the same thing only they have a greater diversity in who they hate. Lemme know how griping on social media is helping out with the situation..
But it IS mainly the boomers that are still in charge, denying the younger generations access to power and to the places where change can really happen. There are some GenX and Millenial Traitors mixed in, but the impulse for these events comes from the boomers.
Vote them out. People complain about the elderly in Congress and then promptly vote them right back in. That enough people are considering them the best qualified is telling. Run some quality younger candidates who talk practical solutions, not idealistic boilerplate…
Just because a group is vocal doesnt mean theyre the majority.
The people complaining about age arent the ones voting for predominantly older politicians.
I haven’t looked up voting statistics lately. Have you?
You really should - in Austria and Germany society is aging a lot. Their demands - while often not even in the workforce anymore - are suffocating the political process wirh no recourse available for rest of us.
That starts with discussion. Discussion takes place, among other places, in forums on the internet.
If we weren't living in a rapidly aging society which gives them the majority for the next decades.
Yeah seems like there’s a constant influx of more old people every year... Sooner than you think, you’ll be one of them. But by then you’ll blame the world on the younger generations.
I am already old, not making that mistake yet. And the demographic curve in our country means that these days the amount of pensioners is rising at a recotd rate.
At the same time, the rich fucks in that generation are using their influence to both make sure the younger generations are paying more and more for something that becomes utterly unreachable for them, and to keep fucking up our planet.
"Hey guys, stop using a discussion forum to discuss a group of people who are provably responsible for many of your woes."
There’s a difference between what you think I said and what I actually said. But I understand your kneejerk response. It’s often the case when someone refutes a dearly held belief such as yours and your boomer nonsense. I’m sure your “provable” complaints are every bit as solid as the right wing’s complaints about immigrants, gays, trans people, people of color, etc. Can you even define “boomer”? Does boomer include everyone born during a specific range of years? From around the world? Of color, or just one race? My definition: it’s an advertisement term for white Americans, middle class or above, born 1945-64. The abysmal voter turnout over the last half century isn’t their fault. The world not being an affordable utopia isn’t their fault either. But sure, pin all the frustrations of the modern world on one generation, nobody from the centuries before and nobody since. It sounds so simple and easy.
The right hate the wrong people. That's it.
That’s not at all what I said, but I get it, reading is hard.
What you said was "you're all the same as the right because they blame other people"
I'm pointing out how stupid that is, because sometimes, other people are to blame. The right just hates the wrong people.
It's not "boomers" exactly, but rather, people wealthy enough to live safe and healthy lives into old age.
I said people, as in people in general, like to blame others. I followed that with differences between the current state of left and right wing in the U.S. And I was sarcastic about it when I used the word “diversity” in regards to the multitude of people the right hates vs the left shitting on the elderly because shitting on anyone else will be met with a great amount of scorn.
Yes, and I pointed out that sometimes blaming others is correct, and sometimes it isn't. You can't just say "everyone likes to blame others" and pretend this is a useful insight.
In the context of the post that was yet another “it’s the boomers’ fault”, generalization is just fine. Nuance and Lemmy don’t get along very well. But sure, “it’s not all ___ people” works. Just don’t phrase it that way….
Do you not see the irony of generalizing Lemmy while trying to flatten all generalizations as being the same?
Do you?
Yes! That's what I'm saying! You're literally doing the same thing, do you not realize that?
Everyone generalizes, there's nothing particularly insightful or useful about that observation. It's trite.
I assure you, from the perspective of the boomer blamers, everything I said is not trite. It might illuminating or it might be infuriating. But it’s something they need to hear.
It's infuriating because it's useless. You're like a fish criticizing other fish for being wet.
