They are slower than regular checkout lines and only benefit the stores. When things go wrong at a self checkout you inevitably sit there for a long time waiting for someone from the store to get around to helping. If theres a problem checking out, the blame for it falls on you. I despise all of them.
Nah, if the self checkout pos freaks out and needs someone, just move your stuff to the next one over. Someone will come fix that one eventually; no harm in leaving it to sing the song of "an item has been removed from the bagging area" to its people, you and your stuff just shifted 3 feet to try a different checkout lane. If anyone complains just tell them the cashier waved you over, it's all good.
