Real. I joined it cuz it said it was FOSS focused and run by the creators of Lemmy which I thought was neat. Did not realize it was a tankie cesspool. I’m now banned from a good portion of it for “Nazi apologia” because I said calling Ukraine Nazis was Russian propaganda
Just jump instances. I might have my reservations about how the aversion to monetization means a lot instances are unstable or slow with no real incentives or even funding to improve it but there's certainly something to be said for decentralization.
How do you change instances
I'm glad the instance I chose based on URL ended up being pretty good because sh.itjust.works.
I choose lemmy.world because it was top of the list and I had no idea of anything when I came over from Reddit back then

I’m not sure why - but have read it a few times. If someone in the know could clue me in if there is actually some back lore to the claim I’d appreciate that.

When I joined, I thought ML was for Machine Learning.
I thought ML is just two letters from Lemmy and it sounds nice

I initially thought .ml was literally the TLD for the nation of Mali - so was super confused.
I mean, it is. But it's one of the TLDs that allows wider use.
Only a few national TLDs require being related to the country, or at least being located in the country.

When I first joined Lemmy 3.5 years ago I almost joined .ml because it was the dev's instance. I'm glad I chose .ee instead.

You may be new enough not to have encountered this yet but our instance has a well earned reputation of being Soviet boot lickers. Be careful on .ml meme subs and stuff, you’ll catch a permaban for saying anything pro Ukraine or in any way interpretable as anti Russia
