Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. This is an LGBTQ+-friendly community -- if that is a problem for you, you should leave.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves / tolerates / hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
  • 5. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Language/язык/Sprache
  • This is primarily an English-speaking community. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
  • Comments written in other languages are allowed.
  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.
  • Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
  • We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
  • Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.

Please report posts and comments that break these rules!

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

I threw about 10 short phrased meeting notes (4-5 words each) into an LLM to get some document formatting started with titles and sections etc. It built a full scope document and inferred a ton of information about the project and product. It was surprising how much it could infer, and suggested very sensible testing criteria and alternate solutions should the main product path not pan out.

I can see why people start believing it "thinks", because it was remarkable what it "understood" about a vague new product. Had I sent the info out to stake holders, they would have assumed this person was a key team member that was involved from day 1.

"Intelligence", as a word has always been ill defined. What's it mean? It's mostly been used to create prejudices via standardized tests, the bell curve, and IQ tests.

I don't believe it's "intelligent" as we don't really know how to define that. But I do think it's really really really good at writing reasonable seeming statements in various languages using probability.

Coding and programming, are just languages. So it will likely be able to get pretty damn good at it, just as it has with the English language.

I think with LLMs accurate regurgitation of facts, is the colary to good code.

But I don't believe that means it "thinks" (which requires introspection, and an internal experience). It does multi-agent computing, and this might even simulate some aspects of thinking... But it's not thinking. It's computing.

It won't be able to do any more than that, until it consistently gets data from having a body (and something like glial thought-interactions/organs/flaws/survival).

By the way, this also means if you could download a mind to a computer - it would slowly lose it's humanity as it lived longer and longer interfacing with computer systems rather than human systems/organs/experiencs.

Eventually that "uploaded human" would become a Clankr, and stop understanding human life, the will to survive/think. Eventually it would just compute (not think/care or have flaws).

Many sci-fi stories are based on the man-to-technology-to-cold-rational-evil pipeline... Less have gone in the other direction, even though it often produces very popular characters: Spock, Data, the Terminator, Pinnoccio.
