Microslop is a security risk. An OS with a backdoor isn't useful for anything but gaming.

[–] hanke@feddit.nu 24 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Why would you want a backdoor on the OS of your gaming machine?

[–] mcv@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 day ago

Some anticheat systems require a backdoor. If those are games you want to play, you have to submit to it. Personally I see it as a reason to avoid those games, but if you really want to play them, you may not have a choice. Apart from pressuring the publisher to support saner anticheat and Linux.

I don't and it sounds like I might not have to soon. Mslop had us by the balls for long enough.

fartknife/ easyanticheat will have support for signed linux kernels with tpm, secure boot and iommu

You don't need no windows for no gaming, this isn't 2015 jesus

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 1 points 15 hours ago

No no no, the backdoor is useful for gaming, not the OS.

The game companies need backdoors for their Anti Cheat, you see.

I know, but I still do classes and they require you use garbage software. Eventually I'll get it sorted out.

It might be worth checking if there's really no alternative. I intend to do that for my son; his school requires Windows, but he's starting to get increasingly annoyed by Windows (his laptop has Win11) so I want to check with the school why exactly Windows is so essential. Presumably, most is Web, so will work just fine on Linux. Specific software may have a Linux version, run fine on Wine, or have an open source alternative.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I know and for the most part that's how it is. Some of the classes still want to use Respond-ass. Which I just end up going to the school library for. If I have to use Win11, I will just run a VM. That OS has been a nightmare.

I feel your pain. Hang in there!

Strange question perhaps -- but is open source/linux supported tax filing software available where you are?

I haven't found any that run reliably outside of Microsoft so far in Canada -- tend to use a windows vm specifically for it, but it's an example of software outside of gaming that's pretty handy, and not typically easy to get / trust on linux yet as far as I'm aware.

I would assume your tax system works differently. I wanted to move to Canada since I have skills to contribute. But I live the greatest country on the earth, the U Ass of A (/s borat joke.)

Anyway, there is a simple free option for those that make under a certain amount; most people have w2 forms so those are pretty much automated; as in your employer already submitted them. But then comes in tax exemptions.

So then it gets more complicated because you don't want to be paying the same tax in multiple ways. For instance, you pay a local tax and then pay a federal tax on your income. I don't have an issue with taxes going to the right place, which is often not the case here.

I always pay the taxes whenever I'm in other countries even though I could get an exemption but I don't think that's right. I get the privilege of going somewhere then I should pay what everyone else pays and besides you don't have to tip -_-

So taxes are complicated here if you're outside of the norm. The amount of different forms I had to file before I quit my latest job was a job in itself, add in a death in the family and it's even more complicated. Like it took months, with a delay, to sort out all off this. And it sucks, if you don't do it right you end up with everything taken away.

Like you, I'm interested in some open source software.

I'm thinking that this step in life(quitting what I was doing) is a good choice because I'm tired. Yeah I can charge 100+ an hour but doing the math for the year, I really should work at a grocery store.

It's not the OS, only microsoft 365

Only because changing the OS compared to stopping a transition to an insecure Microsift cloud service is a much greater task, one that is in progress as well.
