Moderator Guidelines
Moderator Guidelines
- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Lifelong estradiol exposure at the level and ages trans women take it for HRT might actually increase trans women's risk over the baseline of 12% for cis women. If we would take trans health care seriously we might be able to find out for sure.
But also this is the only study of its kind that has even been done and they found the exposure to hormones increase the risk during that exposure and the cancer characteristics of the breast cancer resembled a more female pattern. The more major conclusion for this is we cannot treat trans women's breast cancer prevention the same way we treat cis women (average age was 31, for cis women this is ~61–62 years old), but we need to first take ANY trans healthcare seriously to follow up on this.
EDIT also to all my friends who have breasts, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. What better thread to hijack about this than a boobie thread. If can remember the game the Oregon trail, you should get a mammogram. If you have ever walked in to a Blockbuster, you should get a mammogram. If you can hear the teacher calling his name in your head in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, you should get a mammogram. If you can't get a mammogram due to your age, you should learn how to do a self check and do these once a month.
I don't really have anything of my own to add. The studies are there (thanks, @stopforgettingit@lemmy.world!) for anyone interested in reading up. I just wanted to say that every person with breasts should do regular self-checks. Breast cancer is no joke and it's a real tragedy.
Fuck, I should really learn how to do them...
RIP to my right boob for sure.
But yes, I agree you should learn how to do a self check and also do about once a month in the shower. About half of the women in my support group found their cancer from self exams.
Its pretty quick less than a min for both, you raise one arm then starting at the nipple you will press fingers in to the breast. Then press the tissue in about 1 inch apart spacing and move in a circular direction around the nipple and increasing the circles outward to the armpit. Make sure you get all the way in to your armpit too.
You are looking for anything that feels texturally different, it could be a divet or indent or it could be a lump or bump. In my case it was wide and flat and just a bit harder than the tissue around it and it was on the far right side of my right breast, almost under the armpit.
