Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

I never showed the police her account. (They didn't want proof.) Or shared her real name with anyone but the police. Her real identity is still separate from the account. She seemed really serious with the plans, and given her mental health history, it seemed appropriate since I couldn't come myself... and it seemed to work, she gave up for the day, and the BF came the next day and then they were fine together

So I didn't doxx her... I did only have her real name due to a slip-up on her part though. Would you consider it doxxing if I contacted her brother, dad, etc. instead to make them call/visit her?

You doxxed her to the police though.

I understand your concerns. Some of her posts were concerning. I’m not even totally opposed to you trying to get a wellness check done. Telling her about it was probably scary for her though.

Well, I didn't give them any way to find her online accounts. Her digital identity is safe, I needed to do this to protect the person behind. And they need to know the name and whether she's at home to do their job...

It was probably scary for her to know that you gave the police that information.

That's true but police being mean is extremely rare here, plus they'd use her legal, female name. It was a reality check that her thoughts may have IRL consequences but I feel she needed it then... I think it's appropriate if the alternative is a high suicide risk.

She does know my real full name since we met and I told her the village even earlier. (In fact, unlike her, who lives in a generic block of flats, the peculiarities of my family's house from pictures I sent her, and other public info can help her find my exact address while I can't find hers.) I did it to make her feel like she can trust me, and level the information playing field. I'm sorry to have breached the trust but it felt like the right thing to do.

I can't fault you for trying to do the right thing. Truly. Thanks for being her friend.

I wish I could be a better friend but we've both socialized so little in our formative years (plus I'm neurodivergent and she's socially anxious) that we're fumbling through basics of what a relationship means... I've been putting women on a pedestal, for example. Is the "magical girl" analogy I use for trans women part of this? Maybe...
