They charge for the blue checkmarks? And...people do it? I haven't had xitter since years before nazi boy bought it.

[–] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 49 points 1 month ago (4 children)

Yes, it was one of the more contreversial changes he did. Before, you had to be "vetted" by xitter staff as being both notable and who you said you were. That wasn't a great system, and was effectively a nepotism/who you knew game, but you wouldn't see blue checkmarks for fake accounts.

It used to be a sign of trustworthiness.

Now anyone can get one for a monthly fee.

what I find shocking is that the website still exists and has so many users; I even know a user IRL who hasn't noticed it has gotten any worse since Elon took over ...

[–] Red_October@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

If someone using xitter hasn't noticed it got worse, it's probably because they don't think the Nazis are a bad thing.

[–] nyctre@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nah, it's probably because not everyone cares about the political stuff so if for example you only follow cosplayers or whatever, you never get to see the nazis. At worst you might notice more creeps leaving weird comments but I dunno, I don't actually use it. Maybe I'm way off.

he has been accidentally sending me fascist propaganda without realizing it's fascist, like that Italian sculptor's video that was making the rounds, the guys who made that controversial Joan d'Arc statue with government funds?

[–] nyctre@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh, then yeah.. guy sounds clueless. Also what video? Trying to find it but nothing that matches your description.

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

here is the exact video: https://x.com/AtelierMissor_/status/1925680032115998915

Atelier Missor are the group of French sculptors

here's an article about the controversy around their Joan d'Arc statue:

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/france-statue-nice-joan-of-arc-b2682765.html

[–] nyctre@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh, I was aware of this, just didn't know it had made international news. Statue was decided to stay despite the whole thing. And yeah, the sculptors are macho cunts in the vein of Andrew Tate but I wouldn't have classed them as fascist propagandists. But the shoe fits, tbh, you're right.

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 month ago

they are affiliated with the far right, and the qualities in their propaganda match literl neo-Nazi propaganda videos I have seen: men working in plains-clothes doing manual labor, in this case glorifying the Christian West, expressing a kind of cultural / identitarian supremacy that is common with Islamophobes and racists.

[–] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 17 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Now, it just marks you as somebody stupid enough to give Elon money for no reason.

[–] aeternum@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 month ago

yeah, but blue check mark!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[–] Schadrach@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 month ago

It's not for no reason, it allows longer posts, increases visibility and is required to monetize your account. If you care about any of those things (I don't) you might consider paying for a blue check (I don't). I'm definitely not the target market.

Crazy..so the responder is NOT wrong lol

Before, you had to be “vetted” by xitter staff as being both notable and who you said you were.

This made me think of an easy-ish way to do it for the fediverse:

  1. You must have a Wikidata page, with at least one Wikipedia page associated with that Wikidata page
  2. On the Wikidata page, you must have a P4033 property with that account
  3. Add some ActivityPub metadata for "Account owner's Wikidata Item"
  4. When there's a two way correspondance (Fediverse Account <-> Wikidata entry), show a Wikipedia logo which brings you to the corresponding Wikipedia article about the person.

Unpopular opinion but I think the blue checkmark as a way to show that you support the platform isn’t a bad idea, that it replaced a verification system was the actual issue.

Voyager shows usernames in purple when they are a contributor to their app.

the blue checkmark as a way to show that you support the platform isn’t a bad idea

The premise of how it works is fine, it's the supporting the platform part that's the problem

Totally, fuck nazis!
