Mr Hassett, that ship has sailed already thanks to trump, Musk, and DOGE.

The unspoken agreement of government work is that you accepted a lower salary than the private sector would provide, but in exchange you'd get nearly a lifetime of employment and pretty good retirement benefits. DOGE broke that promise for tens of thousands of government workers. If, as trump has now proven, that working for the government doesn't give you lifetime of employment for lower pay, why would you take the lower pay? Workers will simply deal with the cycle of hiring/firing/layoffs from the private sector and get the higher pay that goes along with as the job security is now equal between private and government.
