Yeah, calling the only black dude Shacklebolt as well. The more you look the worse it gets.

[–] EldritchFeminity@lemmy.blahaj.zone 108 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Even the Irish kid gets worse in the books. Apart from making things explode, his other notable character trait is repeatedly trying to turn various drinks into whiskey.

[–] paranoia@feddit.dk 12 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

his other notable character trait is repeatedly trying to turn various drinks into whiskey.

In fucking fairness half of your personal goals as an Irish teenager in the 90s and 2000s related to acquiring alcohol and getting drunk.

[–] EldritchFeminity@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

True, but the first time we see him try in the books I think he's like 12.

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Yes... and? (I'm Finnish.)

[–] CIA_chatbot@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I mean I think that transcends racial bounds, all teens do that

[–] runner_g@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 2 weeks ago

As and American I'm also trying to turn various drinks into whiskey.

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 weeks ago

Distilleries also have the danger of exploding.

[–] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 66 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh goodness, I never thought of that.

[–] HonoraryMancunian@lemmy.world 77 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

And the bank goblins being Jewish caricatures

[–] a_non_monotonic_function@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

And now about the transfem character Sirona Ryan.

I don't think she was involved in writing Hogwarts Legacy to be fair, just put her stamp of bigot approval on it. Although whoever was writing certainly stuck to her naming conventions.

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 48 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Jesus fucking Christ what? there was a character named shacklebolt???

[–] Scubus@sh.itjust.works 69 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Kingsly Shacklebolt, i believe he was the personal assistant to the prime minister. His most famous quote: "dumbledores got style"

Not the only black character in harry potter btw

[–] turdcollector69@lemmy.world 46 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

"Not the only black character in harry potter btw"

Yeah everyone forgets about Hermione

[–] icelimit@lemmy.ml 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] turdcollector69@lemmy.world 43 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

JK pushed a tweet out explaining that she always envisioned Hermione as a black girl.

It was at the beginning of her descent into madness.

[–] hayvan@feddit.nl 39 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That makes the whole SPEW thing even more hilarious. Imagine a black girl starts a campaign to end slavery of house elves, and everybody makes fun of her. The fucking author's position ins that the elves actually prefer slavery and Hermione is stupid for trying to end that.

[–] Jakeroxs@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I swear y'all talk out your ass so much of the time, I get Rowling is a shitty terf but lying about content of the books is just stupid.

Harry freeing dobby is a major plot point

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I mean I'm on your side sort of, but in the books most of the Elves do prefer having a master and not getting paid. Which one could and probably should equate to slavery.

Hogwarts is like a super prestigious job for the house elves and none of them want to be paid or freed. Although idk who their master would be technically. They sort of imply it's the headmaster at least.

Winky is just broken after she gets freed. Or fired as she sees it. A hit to her honor, and then she becomes a drunk when they go to work for Hogwarts with Dobby, but even then Winky refuses to get paid iirc.

But yeah there's a lot of out of context things. Fuck Rowling but I still like Potter. Not gonna give any money tho

[–] hayvan@feddit.nl 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Besides, it can still be made consensual. Change the contract. Elves prefer being servants? Let them stay as servants willingly while having the option to leave if they prefer so. Keeping only the two extremes yall are slaves and yall are fired also is a pretty much pro-slavery position.

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

You're right. Sure. We could do that.

Or we can just accept that the Wizarding World is actually made for children and not planned out in the same detail as Middle-Earth & Tolkien's languages.

[–] icelimit@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago

I would watch a black Hermione rip Harry and Ron some new ones.

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world -5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Off topic, but I dig black Velma in the reboot.

[–] jacksilver@lemmy.world 18 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Sorry to disappoint, but Velma is Indian in the reboot, as Mindy Kaling is Indian.

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

Not disappointing at all

[–] Armand1@lemmy.world 20 points 2 weeks ago

Like a lot of the worst stuff in the book, it didn't make it into the movies I think.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

reminds me of "spear chucker" on MASH.

[–] rainwall@piefed.social 22 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

That one was on purpose:

In the book, just like in the movie, Spearchucker reveals that the nickname "Spearchucker", ordinarily a racial slur, referred in this case to his javelin-throwing prowess.

They use the racism behind his nickname to address racism:

The film also depicts Spearchucker as a particularly skilled neurosurgeon and this, together with the experience of playing football together, helps Duke Forrest overcome his racial prejudices and the two become friends at the end, shaking hands when it is time for Duke to go back stateside.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

There was a book!?

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Nah... come on.... please, let that not have been a conscious thing

[–] Armand1@lemmy.world 21 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Mate, there's so many weird or disturbing things in the books that didn't make it into the movies.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You can't just leave us hanging like that?

[–] Armand1@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Well, there's stuff like how the book insists that most house elves are happy being slaves, Dobby was the exception. And how it makes fun of Hermione for trying to free them.

If you want a full analysis, Shaun did a good one.

[–] MidsizedSedan@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Is it true that the centaur from movie 1 had more lines than all the black characters in all 7 books?

And then modern fans get mad at black Snape in the TV show (if that gets to finish. My bets is it will patter out like the fantastic beasts movies)

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Fans get mad about black Snape because it would instantly make Harry look like an ultra racist without rewriting half the book.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I believe you, but how so? I've not read the books.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago

Because half the plot of the books are Harry being suspicious of Snape based on basically just looks and a gut feeling at first and then hating him progressively as the books go on.

You can picture it in your mind "Oh Snape is very sketchy, he looks different then all the other professors. I know he is a bad person.. I am going to prove it" with the visual background that he is like the only black professor and just one of a few black wizards shown.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

black Snape in the TV show

lmfao, there's a TV show??

[–] hungryphrog@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, so that they can sell merch without paying royalties to the actors from the original movies, who didn't align with her bigotry.

[–] ProjectPatatoe@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Misread this as (Rusty) Shackleford.
