This Hour Has 22 Minutes is not "Canadian SNL"

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

SNL is Canadian SNL. Lorne Michaels is from Toronto and he scouts most of his talent from Canada.

Just another example of Americans not having any clues about anything outside their borders and not even caring enough to bother to find out either.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works -1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Bro, I've never even heard of this website. Way to baselessly generalize every American, even those that might otherwise align with you.

[–] psycotica0@lemmy.ca 3 points 6 days ago

It's not a website, it's a TV show that's been on the air since 1993 (~32 years)

[–] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 1 week ago

It's much better than SNL.

[–] observantTrapezium@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 week ago

Clicked this post to say just that

I used to call Boys in the Hall Canadian SNL.

Hey, I’m old. I gots the memory problems.

Seriously though, it’s been about 30 years since I’ve seen it.

Kids in the Hall kind of replaced SCTV which was meant to compete with SNL.

Different formats though.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Nope. Lorne Michaels produced both Kids in the Hall and SNL, many cast migrated over.

[–] LeFantome@programming.dev 1 points 2 days ago

I have no idea what you are trying to say.

SCTV was created to compete with SNL. It kept many Canadian comedians in Canada, like John Candy, Eugene Levy, and Catherine O’Hare though some also did SNL—like Marin Short.

I am saying Kkds in the Hall filled the comedy void in Canada left by SCTV. You can disagree about that I guess.

[–] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Didn't know about this show and I just subbed with Jellyseer. Being from the US I hate US TV.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It can be hot or miss, but if you’re into Canadian politics it’s been very hit this year.

[–] rebelsimile@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

Are you saying Trent McClellan’s dead on Greg Fergus impression isn’t gonna play well in the states?

"The Onion" in video form.

[–] aarch0x40@piefed.social 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

It's closer to The Daily Show.

[–] hume_lemmy@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

I'd say more like a slightly political Carol Burnett show.

It is right in the name, “This Hour Has 22 Minutes” is a comedic parody of 60 Minutes and shows like it.

I asked my Chinese AI and it offered this:

This Hour Has 22 Minutes

Mock newsmagazine; sharp, focused, satirical. Cynical, biting, "gotcha" journalism parody. Mostly pre-taped and tightly edited.

Saturday Night Live

Live variety show; broad, chaotic, character-driven. Silly, absurd, celebratory, sometimes clumsy.

I honestly fucking hate this trend. If I wanted to know what an LLM would say about something, I would ask it myself. Shit like this is not a substitute for human interaction.

Also, you couldn't pay me to publicly advertise that my ability to look up information had so completely atrophied.
