I don't want to depend on them for such critical infrastructure. Allow European safety standards for cars instead.

Yeah, if we can't build our own, then the second best option is to find a partner you can trust. As a Japanese-Canadian, I wish I could say Japan should step up, but I'm super ashamed to say that Japanese companies are such ass kissers of the US Empire.
