if cars drove under the speed limit and not over all the time. there would have been plenty of time to go. speeding is inconsiderate to other users and makes everyones travel worse

[–] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works 54 points 2 months ago (4 children)

There’s a lady that goes 30km under the speed limit on the highway during rush hour. In front of her clear traffic, behind her, grid lock.

Not going the speed limit creates the traffic and makes travel worse.

[–] PrimeMinisterKeyes@leminal.space 17 points 2 months ago (2 children)

That is illegal where I live.

[–] SanctimoniousApe@lemmings.world 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

What's the range allowed? There are plenty of places with minimums, but many have such a wide window that they may as well not bother.

[–] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Driving to the conditions is also vague. Some people feel safe driving near the limit in snow, some think you have to go 40 under. Now that also depends on if you have snow tires or not too. If you don’t, you shouldn’t be trying to reach the limit unless the road is clear and dry. But even traction is reduced once it gets near freezing regardless.

In the end, it’s a judgment call, and pulling the person over is only ever going to make the situation worse. They won’t suddenly start going faster or find a different route the next day.

[–] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Highway is 100-110, and slow moving I think is 40km/h under the limit. No slow moving or bikes allowed on the highway in the city.

It’s part of the Can-A-mex corridor, or used to be until the ring road was built.

Also, snow, plenty of reasons to only go 40km/h in some conditions, going under the limit is illegal only when you’re truly limiting traffic, and that’s always a judgment call.

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

"Under the speed limit' is also 59 (assuming 60 is the limit).... Not just 30...

[–] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Speeding also means 1km/h over as well, you saying a 2km/h difference is what makes something safe vs unsafe…?

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip -1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

No it's what makes it legal vs illegal

Plenty of people dangerously overtake to go just 5kmph faster. That was my point but it seems I should have stated it plainly.

[–] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works -1 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Going under is just as illegal as going over.

[–] ebolapie@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's a speed limit, as in "go no faster than this." Speed minimums are a different law. On surface streets speeding doesn't even save you any time because of traffic lights. You might get a cycle or two ahead, but you still end up waiting at a light with everyone else.

[–] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

There’s also speed minimums in most country’s.

And my comment was specially about the highway if you cared to read instead of bloviating about an unrelated situation ;)

[–] ebolapie@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Speed minimums and limits are different numbers. Going under the speed limit is not necessarily illegal.

[–] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

And speeding isn’t necessarily illegal either. Most cops won’t do anything until to go 15km over the limit.

So as I said, JUST as illegal, since it’s judgement calls in either situation.

[–] ebolapie@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

There is a range of speeds that are legal to drive at on any given road. This range lies between the speed minimum and the speed limit. Speeds outside this range are broadly speaking a violation of traffic laws. A law that is not enforced does not stop being a law.

[–] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Laws that aren’t enforced can be fought as unfair when enforced. Laws that aren’t held up in a court of law are no longer laws anymore.

Nice little imaginary world you’re living in there.

There’s laws on the books that makes it legal to shoot a thieving Native, do you seriously think you won’t be prosecuted if you do…? Just because a law exists, doesn’t mean it’s still “legal”. It has to be enforced.

Like jeeze know a little law before opening your yap next time.

[–] ebolapie@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

I don't think it's very likely that you could beat a traffic ticket based on "it's unfair." People do still get pulled over for going 5 over. People do not get pulled over for going 5 under, because going 5 under is explicitly legal. What even is this argument? You're seriously going to draw a comparison to a genocide because I said speeding isn't "just as legal" as driving within the legally proscribed range of speeds?

Some state laws specifically define the scenarios for impeding traffic, including driving below the minimum speed limit

SOME STATES, of one country, of one continent on this world, you presemtious, insulting, wee little cunt

[–] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Every country has similar laws, you understand this yeah? It’s not like America is unique in this lmfao.

There was also more than one point, but of course you would focus on one and try to discredit it, but you failed miserably. You also didn’t even quote the whole thing, which goes on to explain more restrictions that got universally. You’re just a bitter person aren’t you?

Example, the Uk

While there is no specific national minimum speed limit in the UK,

driving too slowly can be illegal if it is deemed to be inconsiderate, dangerous, or causes an obstruction to other road users. Police can penalize drivers for driving without due care and attention,

This is easily googleable, and every country has legislation you can look up. This isn’t that hard of concept to understand, if you cared to look past your own nose.

[–] SwingingTheLamp@piefed.zip -2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Maybe your local government could do proper planning so that convenient and timely public transit would offer her a viable alternative to driving? Let's not blame individuals for systemic problems.

[–] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

She could also take different roads where the speed limits suit her comfort.

[–] SwingingTheLamp@piefed.zip 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The other drivers could also take those different roads, too, and avoid the slow driver, no?

[–] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You don’t think those roads are already congested by people trying to do exactly that…?

[–] SwingingTheLamp@piefed.zip 0 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

So there you have your answer as to why she's on the highway to begin with! Anyway, good public transit would help with the traffic congestion, too.

[–] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Other way around dude, roads are Congested from people already ignoring the highway since it’s going to be bad. Pick your poison.

And there is okay public transport, some people just prefer the “freedom” of driving. Even the best public transport isn’t going to make it across town in the same amount of time as a non-lighted highway. Too many stops.

You seem to have such a narrow view and understanding of the complexities of transportation and just want to bloviate about being anti car.

I’m leaving this conversation now, there’s no good that will come from trying to educate you, since you wouldn’t want to be, to set in your ignorance.

[–] SwingingTheLamp@piefed.zip -1 points 2 months ago

If it makes you feel better to believe that, go ahead. For my part, I think it's a pretty obvious truth that when the government makes an open-access highway for everybody to use, everybody is going to use it, even in ways you may not like. Especially when it makes driving the fastest and most convenient way to get around. (Making driving on the highway faster than public transit requires lots of infrastructure, and was a deliberate policy choice.)

[–] kurikai@lemmy.world -3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

found the carbrain. you also changed the subject. i said nothing sbout a highway.

if its rush hour on a highway, everyone is driving under the limit.

[–] rockstarmode@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

if its rush hour on a highway, everyone is driving under the limit.

This might be true in a lot of places, but let me introduce a counterpoint: Los Angeles.

We invented freeways, and I'm convinced we've perfected shitty traffic. Get on the 405 anytime between 6a and 10p? Gridlock, everyone is going below the speed limit. Get on basically any of our other freeways at rush hour? Yeah, that's going to be us doing our best impression of NASCAR, driving bumper to bumper at least 10 over the speed limit.

It's so well known that it's a meme at this point. Every holiday season there's a bunch of posts on social media about visitors needing to get with the program. My favorite this year was the "stay the fuck away from the left lane" guy.

Is it safe? Probably not. Is it reality in LA? Absolutely.
