What's the issue? Do you normally label switches at home?
I think he's comparing it to user interfaces in the computing sense.
For context (sort of), I'm pretty sure that's the same John Carmack who is one of the pioneers of the FPS genre of games as the lead dev of Wolfenstein 3d back in 1992.

For a 6 switch panel wouldn't be a bad idea. I'm poor so my rooms only have one switch per room, so it's pretty straightforward. But maybe some day...
Switches at my home change place with every update so I have to re-learn which switch does what. It's a nightmare.
I've got a couple of "smart" switches now, and this comment made me realize that I could have homeassistant reassign them periodically & randomly.
