Community rules (click to expand)
1. Follow the site-wide rules
- Instance-wide TOS: https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/
- Lemmy code of conduct: https://join-lemmy.org/docs/code_of_conduct.html
2. Be civil
- Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
- Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
- Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
- Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
- Bigotry will not be tolerated.
3. Post Linux-related content
- Including Unix and BSD.
- Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of
sudoin Windows. - No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
- Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
4. No recent reposts
- Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
5. π¬π§ Language/ΡΠ·ΡΠΊ/Sprache
- This is primarily an English-speaking community. π¬π§π¦πΊπΊπΈ
- Comments written in other languages are allowed.
- The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
- Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
6. (NEW!) Regarding public figures
We all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations. - Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
- We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
- Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed. Β
Please report posts and comments that break these rules!
Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

If there is a cli variant, why do you feel the need to do the same in a gui, its slower, most of the time far uglier... All in all just not as good as the cli tool
Spot on.
To the extent that is true, then the novice doesn't end up asking for help. The goal is that the capability is discoverable. Or if it's really a bit harder, there are hopefully tutorial youtube videos that cover the use case.
But when a user asks for specific help on a task they couldn't figure out for themselves, or are asking for help with a 'something went wrong' dialog box, well helping with CLI is much more feasible than the involved mess of trying to basically make video tutorials ad-hoc, or screen share, or try to help them find the obscure log file an application wrote somewhere with the real error.
Thank you!! Great point
I think the problem lies in the usage of commands from the internet, if you take a look at the commands, they get very straight forward and easy to use. Also i never said that the commands where hard, or you need to use them. If a newcomer uses a gui its fine, but for the most power, and least resources, the cli is, ans will always be, the best.
I see your point there, but it is just far easier to give an answer in command form, than telling people where to click on a GUI.
But i do understand what you are saying, and i cant argue with it. GUI tools are good for early users, and those who dont want to use the CLI. CLI is better for those who want/need that extra power.
I dont help them at all, i am here just trying to understand the people who help others. Also, do you want people to help or not? Do you help ppl? I think you should appreciate any help you can get. Even if it is the evil CLI help.
Two-day suspension.
Mimimi, you are soooooo cute, trying to get me to stop saying the truth on the internet. My friend, if you want to stop me, then ban me. Please!
Truth, my ass. I've read your recent comments. You're just being a self-righteous dickhead with a false sense of superiority. You derive your self-worth from being a contrarian.
Thanks for giving me a reason to report you :3
Rule 2: be civil
I apologize for the misbehavior of one of our users. The person was warned for misbehavior on other instances and was unrepentant. He even had the audacity to act arrogantly and curse me out per DMs. Upon discussion with other admins, we decided to permanently remove the user and warn the user shall he see this that any alt account of his we become aware of, will be permanently banned from Feddit.
