I mean surely recent events wrt Greenland have shown it's at least slightly more complicated than that
That's just because the times are changing and the American empire isn't the same as it used to be. As such, it's retreating and cannibalising itself and its vassal states. NATO has overstayed its usefulness with these new American geopolitical strategies.
