"America" is a continent with more than 20 countries; not a country.
You are referring to "United States of America" a quite unoriginal name. You can call its citizens "USians".
Imagine France called itself "Europe" and claimed they are the only Europeans. The rest is "East Europe", and that they are not European, but "East Europeans".
That's the nonsense that Americans (inhabitants of this continent) have to deal with because of the uncreative founding fathers of USA.
You can blame a lot of todays problems on the founding fathers, but this isn't one of them IMO. They would have used the states names for their collective nouns.
If you're actually advocating for change, I think Yankee is a way better term than USians. I can't imagine people saying USians in a normal conversation, while Yankee rolls off the tounge.
Or just Yanks. I already call them this sometimes :P
