That's great news, but let's not forget that the National Guard didn't sign up to be Trump's police, didn't want to be there, and had their lives disrupted by being mobilized for a cheap political stunt. They're not the bad guys here.

Let's not pretend there are no itchy trigger fingers in the national guard.

[–] NJSpradlin@lemmy.world 23 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

The Guard does have a good number of your ‘renta-cop’, ‘mall cop’, ‘southern hunting bro’ types… that get their rocks off by playing war on the weekends, or deploying every few years, absolutely.

But, there’s also a larger population of underprivileged, overburdened, and poverty stricken civilians trying to make ends meet by selling their very bodies to the elite so they can play their little war games.

Should we lump them in with the police and ICE? ‘They made their choices!’, sure… but, it’s class warfare here and the elite have an outsized hand on the lever. They make us poor, so that the crumbs they feed us are enough to turn us against each other.

The guardsmen also signed multi-year contracts. ICE and the police can and will give anyone a badge with no questions or obligations. That makes a big difference in how they behave and who is selected. Right now ICE is selecting for the worst of the worst of us. Anyone signing up at this time knows of their awful reputation and apparently wants to be associated with it.

The overalap isn't as small as you imply. If they aren't bendable into order following drones, they don't make it in. That's literally the entire point of Basic Combat Training.

They are. They volunteered knowing FULL well what kind of shit the US does and condones. Every single one of them.

[–] arrow74@lemmy.zip 3 points 8 hours ago

The "just following orders" defense. That's a bold choice

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 39 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

Why would any cops be listening to anyone but the chief???

[–] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 19 points 9 hours ago

Because they're the foot-soldiers of authoritarianism; therefore simps for authority.

Also American cops are the most uneducated and unqualified in the developed world. Idiocracy is as idiocracy does.

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Because they aren’t robots following a chain of command they’re people and people can change allegiances.

[–] flandish@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

they’re not people, they’re cops.

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 5 hours ago

Very funny, but yes cops are people with the same capacity of evil as the rest of us.

They are not a different breed of evil thing that we could never be.

Don't start giving me hope. Every time I think things are turning around and America might not go full nazi Germany, something Hitlerrific happens again

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 18 points 9 hours ago

Okay great. Now, about those Epstein files...

[–] xyzzy@lemmy.today 16 points 9 hours ago

Under pressure from a federal judge, the Justice Department clarified that Washington’s police chief will, for now, retain control of the city’s police force. The revision came after Judge Ana C. Reyes encouraged the Justice Department and D.C. to reach an agreement or she would intervene and block the federal government.

They don’t want it to go to court.

[–] miss_demeanour@piefed.ca 4 points 8 hours ago

I'd like to believe this, but SCOTUS has already deemed Trump as the 'one true god', plus god ignores the courts, regardless.
