The political approach taken is that flawed Americans are inside the ownership structure of Government supported, or to be supported, Canadian infrastructure projects.

  1. is better US billionaire backed investment the only other option?
  2. would Chinese investment be any worse.

There's plenty to disagree with the nature of the projects chosen (also a key criticism in OP), and the projects that China would/could help with would be far more progressive, human, and have a futurist Canadian involvement for sustainable generations.

On the pure economic side, investment in Canada matters. The inherent assumption between the 2 choices is that money spent on Canada is good for Canada, ideally with proper returns for Canada. I would agree that money is more important than morals. But on an at least equal "mandate plane", purpose/value/sustainability is as important as money and loser infrastructure for infrastructure/spending sake.
