I'm betting on micro stroke and some partial face paralysis. It was rumored he had micro strokes before. This time is visible so they have to hide his face for some time hoping he will get better.

Robert Byrd comes to mind for some level of about-face though - entered politics through the Klan and filibustered against the Civil Rights act, but later in life was recognized by the NAACP. Still said/believed a lot of stupid shit though.
