The government argues that the changes are necessary to stop Canada Post from losing so much money.
Canada is losing money by paying $400k a year to the PM and $300k for each party leader. We need to remove them so we don't lose so much money. See how stupid that sounds.

Except Canada Post literally is. It's been a self sustaining Crown corporation since the 80s. Part of their mandate is to pay for themselves.
Until the internet came along and ruined the market, this was a reasonable option.
While all that is true, if the service is losing half a billion dollars a year, to provide a service that is becoming less and less relevant (thinking of the letter delivery portion here. Parcel delivery is obviously hugely relevant), it comes to a point where you need to re-evaluate what you are doing. The pool of money the government has to work with isn't infinite.
This should be a manditory service for every resident of Canada and therefore not a profit-making endeavor. The same as workers' comp, civic transportation, etc should be.

The thing you are missing is that Canada Post delivers parcels to many remote communities that amazon and other parcel delivery services don't reach.
Dwayne Jones, National President of CPAA, noted that many rural post offices are in locations without road access, so “the options for sending and receiving necessities of life are much more limited.” Mr. Brisson and Jan Simpson, National President of CUPW, both explained that their private-sector competitors often do not serve these communities because the costs outweigh the benefits. In fact, they both indicated that Canada Post’s competitors often rely on the Crown corporation for last-mile deliveries in rural and remote areas of the country.

Fuck those people then? Fuck the many indigenous (and non indigenous) communities that have no other accessible connections to large cities and government services?
Yes, structural change to their business model is absolutely required. Screwing over your essential workers should not be a part of that change.

Glad to hear it. I’m sick of all this bullshit argument about profitability from a national service we can’t be pouring billions into the military and otherwise and be whining about the postal service not turning a profit. It’s ridiculous. That’s literally what taxes are supposed to be for. And it there aren’t enough taxes well, maybe it’s finally time to start taxing the ultra rich parasites appropriately.
I'd forgotten they were still on strike.
I hope this leads to a better path for CP, their current path isn't sustainable. They wanted to make these sorts of changes over a decade ago but political meddling kept it from happening.
