Not before sleep, but sometimes I'll wake up from a dream with a deep feeling of inspiration. On the few times I've written down what I dreamed and thought was so insightful/promising/solution to a problem, I read it in the morning and was like "this is the dumbest thing I've ever read".

I also used to keep a dream journal. I stopped for the same reason you did, lol.
I’m much more likely to have a brilliant insight in the shower then when swimming in the daily detritus of my subconscious mind.
The last time I did this, I remember waking up so excited, remembering a genius breakthrough I had in the middle of the night.
I rolled over and saw the words “match gun” alongside a rough sketch of a gun that shot out matches, striking them on the way out so they would be like little flaming arrows.
