Throw back to the Onion news video about that cloud thing everyone is talking about. https://theonion.com/hp-offers-that-cloud-thing-everyone-is-talking-about-1819595260/

To be fair, many of us in the tech world still say the cloud was a mistake as implemented and are seeing others come around to our way of thinking. AWS, Azure, and Cloudflare outages. Accounts randomly deleted. Privacy issues. Etc.

Never mind that it’s now so much more expensive to host things there vs yourself.

I just finished moving one of my projects from Digital Ocean to a leased server. Even with a second host for backups, it's a lot cheaper and leaves me with plenty of excess capacity.

It takes a little more time for maintenance but it's not too bad.

My god this video is 14 years old and still just as relevant. I love the bit at the end

"Next week we'll be talking about BodyDoo, the popular new device that links with your iPhone to post all of your bodily functions right to facebook"

The onion is shockingly insightful.

LLMectrolytes, it’s what vegetative intelligence crave.

Well I mean it doesn't have to be out of the toilet, but yeah that's the idea.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 10 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Except it's lacking the "I", so all they have is the A & the hole where the I would have been, you know, the A-hole?

[–] MotoAsh@piefed.social 8 points 3 months ago

Y'know, it's starting to make a lot of sense why tech bros like AI... They're already used to stanning for a-holes.

Saw some comment by a manager on linkedin saying something like "Yeah, AI can replace developers now", and I'm just thinking good luck with that buddy.

[–] yesman@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago (1 children)

They don't need you to use AI to make revenue. They need you training AI to make it into a profitable product... that will replace you.

The cliche about how if the service is free, then you are the product is only half true. The other half is that participating in social media is also unpaid labor generating valuable IP without compensation or ownership.

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

They need you training AI to make it into a profitable product… that will replace you.

If they really believe in that, they should seek psychological help.

Also, replacing you won't generate enough revenue for keeping the main LLM provides alive. Yes, they are that wasteful.

They haven't implemented blockchain technology yet! How do they expect to implement AI technology when they haven't implemented blockchain technology yet?!

[–] ArmoredThirteen@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Gonna use AI to implement blockchain, obviously

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 months ago

Use AI to democratize AI using DeAI and running AI on the blockchain.

[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 4 points 3 months ago

Are they gonna feed Brawndo to the AI?

[–] Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

How much protein is in your AI?

I mean I hate AI as much as the next guy but that's ridiculous, AI definitely has its uses. The drawbacks are in the meta, the fact that it's a economic bubble, controlled by oligarchs, drains a shitload of energy and fresh water, and a threat to the job market and humanity in general.

But to pretend that it is useless is just dumb. It's overhyped and dangerous, definitely not useless.

[–] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Context and nuance? In a fediverse comment section? Is that even allowed?

[–] flambonkscious@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Hang on, I've got a spare pitchfork around here somewhere

[–] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 2 points 3 months ago

Thank heavens! Let's get the ol' mob to storm the castle/this guy's comment!

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

name an AI company that isn't actively or supporting the subversion of world democracy.

AI is fascist.

[–] flambonkscious@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 months ago

Good point. As usual it's not the tool or technology, it's the fucking degenerates driving it
