Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Sorry for ruining the joke, but the character can be female even though the actor isn't

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 31 points 1 month ago

Yeah, honestly, stuff like this is just telling the world that you don't know what acting is.

What if an actor comes out as non-binary? Are you suddenly convinced that every character they've ever played is non-binary?

Are gay actors not allowed to play straight characters?

Do actors have to be exactly the same age as the characters they portray? What about when the actor gets older? Does that retroactively make all of their characters older?

I know they're doing this as a bit, but it's bad bit that reinforces stupid ideas about trans actors. Let trans people portray whoever the fuck they want to portray and stop turning it into a whole thing.

Does

Genesis 37:10:

And when he had related this to his father and brothers, his father rebuked him, and he said: “What does it mean to you, this dream that you have seen? Should I, and your mother, and your brothers reverence you upon the earth?”

[–] TheRtRevKaiser@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They're almost certainly just using one translation - probably KJV since I don't find any instances of "does" in that version, they would all be "doth" or "hast" most likely. I guess it's just a meme so it doesn't really matter if you half-ass it, but it's definitely not the best way of doing it.

"Sex" is also definitely in the NIV and some other translations.

yeah I mean no English words except false cognates are in the Bible without translation, so it's a meaningless question.

In fact the words in the first half of the Bible aren't in the second half because the first half is Hebrew/Aramaic and the second half is Koine Greek.

[–] luciferofastora@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago

Probably depends on the translation, but they could have mentioned wich translation they're using.

[–] Zombie@feddit.uk 9 points 1 month ago

The Bible is an anthology (a compilation of texts of a variety of forms) originally written in Hebrew (with some parts in Aramaic) and Koine Greek.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bible

60.87% of these words were in somebody's English interpretation of the bible, but not the bible.

What is this? The only word I recognise is mpreg

Juno is a film in which Elliot Page plays the titular character Juno, the plot involves Junos pregnancy and a ~~problematic~~sexual relationship with a character played by Michael Cera. Elliot Page was known as Ellen Page when the movie released and in general read as a women during those times.

e: erasing hints of me being german and capitilizing nouns in langauges that don't do that.

e2: thought for some reason Cera played another character, both played teens.

As if your user name left anyone guessing your nationally, DZH 2000 😅

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

maybe he's swiss or austrian

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Na, I would bet it's Germany. Neither the Austrians not the Swiss are known for their Panzerhaubitzen. The Swiss could craft some fine Dunstabzugshauben though.

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Ich weisse nicht, meine Deutche ge...forgetten

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 3 points 1 month ago

The name is a combination of two words that have some similarities.

altr Dunstabzugshaube

and

altr Panzerhaubitze (German PZH 2000)

It means nothing, just a joke. But I like it.

[–] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The username looks like something my cat would type jumping on the keyboard and is pronounced like an angry German yelling at said cat for jumping on the keyboard

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Haubitze is German for howitzer. You can't expect it to sound like fairies and butterflies.

Besides that I hate that old "German sounds angry" shit. If you scream in French, it'll sound harsh as well.

[–] ThirdConsul@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Besides that I hate that old “German sounds angry” shit

I mean:

  1. It's funny because it's true
  2. All non-Germany speaking countries have at least 1 joke, where the point is with German language you just don't know if it's a new vacuum cleaner brand name, or a declaration of war.
[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

A German talking (in English) why German is perceived as harsh:

[–] ThirdConsul@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Nice scientific approach to proving that German sounds angry.

He's also wrong by saying that people think German is warlike and ugly because of Hitler. German neighbours (e.g. Poles) have written sources hundred years old proving him wrong (at least 1890-ish)

Edit: even older lol, Wincenty Kadłubek was implying that in ~1200

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Not like I perceived it. And I wouldn't say I think Polish sounds melodic or beautiful. Maybe neighbors hated each other for centuries.

[–] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's true, I still sound like an American pussy when I speak it. Maybe I'll sound angrier if/when I actually learn to speak it properly?

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I've started learning Spanish some weeks ago just too keep me busy and I'm still having fun. Try it, maybe it'll give you joy.

[–] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 1 points 1 month ago

I've been trying to learn it for a couple years, I'm still less advanced than a small child. Shit's pretty complicated, and I'm not sure it's really worth learning, most Germans speak English. Would've been nice to have been taught it when I was a kid, but it is what it is.

First read mpreg as mpeg and started wondering is this some new media codec or something :D

[–] JustAnotherKay@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

I read jpeg and was really confused how something could retroactively become an image
