Can't even use it with Premium.

Yes, I have YouTube Premium. Family member has it, might as well take advantage of it.

It still works in Firefox if you switch to the desktop site. You can also use uBlock Origin and SponsorBlock with it to get rid of the ads.

Video Background Play Fix for Firefox as well

Don't forget shorts block. It's like the YouTube of my youth. Lol

But watch how this doesn’t put a dent in their viewership. I swear, YouTubers are a perfect example of cultural Stockholm syndrome.

We need a real YouTube alternative.

Won't happen. Google ran YouTube at a net loss for a decade before turning a profit. Very few companies have the kind of money to invest like that. Video hosting is crazy expensive, especially when it's free.

Given the number of porn video websites now, I don't think the cost of video hosting is the major issue.

The bigger issue is likely having to moderate the site. Twitch focused on live streaming as a way to reduce exposure to copyrighted content and TikTok kept videos short enough that it could skate around fair use by not being able to air longer form copyrighted content.

It'll never happen, until they make YT premium so prohibitively expensive that a majority of users no longer want to pay. If they're smart, they'll keep it at the current price until it starts losing money, because their effective monopoly is YouTube'S most valuable asset. Once they get any kind of decent competition, the whole house of cards tumbles.

Yep. I was using it on Vivaldi for Android until I couldn't anymore. Now I'm switching to GreyJay.

NewPipe still seems to be working (thankfully)

[–] cv_octavio@piefed.ca 2 points 4 hours ago (3 children)

I've had a week of "content unavailable" in newpipe. Does not seem to be working at all anymore.

If you downloaded from f-droid you can add the new pipe as an additional repo and get updates sooner. I had to do this to get newpipe working again. Add this

https://archive.newpipe.net/fdroid/repo?fingerprint=e2402c78f9b97c6c89e97db914a2751fda1d02fe2039cc0897a462bdb57e7501

It turns this repo on, and you can update the app by choosing a repo drop down in the update area.

Update it. Version 0.28.2 fixes this

I got sick of the cat and mouse with updates and youtube making changes.

I tried Grayjay from f-droid and I'm never going back. Getting all my video platforms on one amazing app with excellent queueing, background play, pop-out player, etc. It even has ad-blocking and sponsorblock built in. I've happily paid for this app and set it up ok my PC too. Highly recommended.

"You will buy youtube premium, damn it!!!"

[–] N0x0n@lemmy.ml 3 points 6 hours ago

Orion still does background playback and also blocks ads ! I only tested it on an iPhone though :/

[–] ryujin470@fedia.io 3 points 6 hours ago

See this article for an analysis.

They tested that when logged in with an account without YouTube premium, locking the screen paused playback and caused the playback notification to disappear. The notification didn't disappear with an YouTube Premium subscription (althrough playback still paused). This was a few days ago, before this confirmation.
