Are we sure they're american?

Without knowing what posts they're talking about, probably. I try not to drag US politics with me everywhere I go, but the fact that my country is ten years into the dumbest fascist coup in history and they still might succeed in knocking over our democracy is mentally invasive in a way that's hard to put into words, and it tends to distort the lens through which one sees the world. Now that I reflect on it, I don't think a week has gone by in the past decade where I haven't thought about Trump, MAGA, and the mortal threat they pose to me and my friends. Maybe a few weeks in the beginning of the Biden admin, when I genuinely thought we had dodged the bullet and the Republican party would ditch Trump, but even then I knew the fascist problem hadn't gone away completely and would be back. Its constant presence tends to make me see things through the lens of US politics even in places where it might be a reach. Combine that with the fact that there are just a lot of Americans with internet access and I get why it gets annoying.

Sorry y'all have to hear about it all the time, if it's any consolation I too am tired of it and hope we can get our shit together, but it's a tense time and probably will be for the next while.

I get it, they want be to be as outraged as they are, for good reason. Here's the thing: unlike our friends in the land of burger and cookie dough, I don't feel the need or necessity to be angry all the fucking time! I want one place, just one place on the internet that's not shit. Can we have that?

This is one thing I noticed after coming here from reddit- I realized I was addicted to how angry reddit made me feel. It’s another kind of dopamine.

I feel like people are nicer here.

To your point, I’ve come to realize that just feeling angry all the time doesn’t really accomplish anything. It’s better to do some things to take action. So I’ve taken to helping the angry people find something helpful to do rather than stoking each other’s anger all the time. I think there’s an outrage addiction element at play here, as odd as that may sound.

I don’t really believe there should be explicit bans on politics in any particular space, personally, but I do think we as individuals can do better to look after each other’s mental health and contribute productive things to whatever conversational space we find ourselves in.

I think you're 100% right. This was something I previously noticed while working in the media sector, not with anger, but stress. Some people would seem to purposely stress themselves up about very minor incidents, and I think there was a subconscious craving for an adrenaline upper and dopamine downer guiding their actions. It's definitely a good general practice to talk down people who get themselves worked up, but I've met plenty who just won't allow that. I've also spent enough time of my life trying to get people to calm down, now I just want to exchange clever wit with strangers and appreciate silly things.

I can't speak for everyone else but in my own experience it is almost exclusively non Americans making it political at the Americans who are posting.

Almost exactly like this post is doing, in fact.

A lot of people don't realise that not talking about something is an option. You can talk about fun things instead.

[–] Object@sh.itjust.works 38 points 17 hours ago

Or do both, just in appropriate places.

I can think of at least one comm that I, a filthy American (for my sins), frequent, and which has remained completely devoid of political discussion.

I can’t think of more than one at this precise moment, but I’m sure if I wracked my brain for a bit…
