I NEED TO FOCUS THE TAB AND THE WINDOW FOR THE AD TO PLAY??????

Really makes you wonder the addiction people have to watching streams that they aren't immediately leaving the service for good after seeing that.

[–] Underwaterbob@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 hours ago

They've blocked Twitch in Korea. I don't miss it.

[–] Sprinks@lemmy.world 5 points 4 hours ago

Copy/paste of the steps i have posted in a friend group discord.

Block Twitch Ads without pausing stream Will not work in Chrome

In Ublock Origin Dashboard

  1. My filters (tab) --> Add twitch.tv##+js(twitch-videoad)
  2. Select Apply
  3. Settings (tab) --> Scroll to bottom of page
  4. Check I am an advanced user
  5. Select the cog to the right of the text I am an advanced user
  6. At the bottom of the page, locate userResourcesLocation
  7. Change it from unset to https://raw.githubusercontent.com/pixeltris/TwitchAdSolutions/master/vaft/vaft.user.js
    • If there is already a URL: At the end of the existing URL, add a space and then the above link

Why do they keep shooting themselves in the foot? Will enough people put up with this shit to keep them in business?

I dunno, I haven't looked at the site in probably five years or longer, but maybe they think they can hold out long enough that the next generation will just accept this is how it is? Is that the plan?

Twitch soon: Drink your verification can

[–] minorkeys@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

That doesn't sound like my concern. Ads, everywhere, all the time, for everything, does sound like my concern.

[–] angband@lemmy.world 25 points 13 hours ago

This ad can't play because I don't watch twitch.

Can't miss what you never used

[–] tackleberry@thelemmy.club 3 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

The name Twitch sounds like someone going through a withdrawal from powerful substances.

[–] BreadOven@lemmy.world 6 points 12 hours ago

Wtf, this is real?

[–] dudesss@lemmy.ca 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

What's the alternatives? Non-self hosting, and you know what, self-hosting because why not

[–] moonpiedumplings@programming.dev 6 points 11 hours ago

Owncast is the self hosted stream thing. It has some rudimentary federation capibilities, but nowhere near the ease discovery of twitch.

I know some streamers that have an owncast, expired_popsicle uses debian Linux and has one. (It's tech/linux streamers because of course).

[–] 1984@lemmy.today 51 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Didnt you guys watch that black mirror episode? It was exactly like this. Look away from ads and you get punished.

[–] Dicska@lemmy.world 5 points 10 hours ago

Fifteen million merits.

If we want to avoid this shit, we need to come up with a free, open source, ad free alternative, for everything you see doing this. The problem is, once it becomes big enough, you'll need at least some money invested to keep it running (server, maintenance, services, etc.). And then guess what generates enough money that scales with usage. I hate this, and I reaaaaally hope there's some other way.

[–] ShittDickk@lemmy.world 58 points 1 day ago (9 children)

Why the fuck does my browser need to send it the information that its muted or minimized?

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 2 points 3 hours ago

Why

Because money

[–] dreadbeef@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

there are many ways of detecting minimized/inactive or not. You can do setInterval throttle detection when browsers slow down JS in inactive tabs for performance reasons.

[–] Potatar@lemmy.world 20 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I need everyone to look at what you can do with HTML5 "game engines". You want mouse poisiton? You want to know if the mouse is in on the page or not? Internet speed? Audio card codec?

If a 13 years old using the free version of construct3 can do it, capitalism can do it.

[–] humorlessrepost@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

This is why browser games don’t tend to work in Librewolf. Also why I use Librewolf.

[–] hackitfast@lemmy.world 41 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Firefox has plugins to spoof specific tabs as always active.

[–] Astertheprince@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

You should link them so more people can find them easily.

[–] 1984@lemmy.today 17 points 1 day ago (3 children)

You must be using one of those browsers from an ad company.

Joke’s on them, my computer doesn’t even know whether it’s muted or not.

20 GOTO 10

(I used to have one of those until 2015, when it broke down. Never ever found a replacement. By that point it was yellow, not white-gray lol)

Them bitches let ya know if you were getting a text. Loved that shit.

If it is publicly-traded, it will be enshittified. This is an ironclad, inviolable law.

I dropped them like a bad habit when they first implemented the advertisements. I have never looked back.

Fuck I though this was a satirical shitpost but it's real. This seems like the last stop before that patent about yelling the company name to get back to your content...

I don't care about any platform enough to be abused by it.
