The problem is that everyone is expecting a pain free transition where it's functionally 1:1. It will never be that way. Mastodon is a decent experience which had improved quite a lot (ive been using it since 2018). There's also Bluesky if people insist on having the polished corporate experience (ie. Gamification algorithms) which will inevitably be overcome by enshitification like all other corporate services.
Something has to be done though. Switch to a custom ROM on android. Ditch apple or simply don't upgrade - repair the device... If you must use AI use Mistral or something not owned by American tech oligarchs. Get off the google apps, use Linux... There are so many ways to do something. Just do what you can feaaibly do and try to get your friends and family on board as well.
Very good point. In order to break the entrenched powers it would have to be from the ground up approach. Dismantle everything or else we fall in the same rut
There was an interview I saw recently with Asmodei where he said that Anthropic aren't categorically against autonomous weapons, only that they didn't think they were ready, seemingly implying they would make mistakes similar to how LLMs hallucinate. A lot of the media coverage around them seemed to imply that they had a higher ethical standard than the others, and I mean... maybe? I guess it could be argued that wanting to minimize collateral damage is more ethical, but regardless, I think it's important to keep perspective when we see how they act in the coming weeks and months.
