Reality shows are so fake. He's making a vinegrette with 19 seconds left, but at 1 second left everything is plated perfectly and he is standing calmly.

The timer on shows like this is generally treated as a recommendation for pacing/narrative purposes. Contestants are generally allowed to go over time by a small amount. Usually the only time you'll see somebody actually be penalized for "not finishing in time" on these shows is if the thing they're trying to finish is somehow ruined or otherwise made worse by their attempt to go past the time limit, in which case they'll use that failure for content. Otherwise, they stitch it all to look a lot more frantic than it actually is on-set and show everybody panicked and finishing right at the last second. The dramatic background music also does a lot of heavy lifting in the edit.
food shows will also usually shoot a separate scene of a frantic countdown where the contestants frantically wave their hands over the already finished and plated dishes and open and close the oven and throw some seasoning over nothing in order to edit it in over the countdown.
Also the judges are usually eating cold food that was refrigerated while they were shooting other stuff and other feedback segments.
Been watching Great British Bake Off recently, the ethical editing is really refreshing.
Only reality TV I enjoy, and the reason I started paying attention to how trash American reality TV really is.
They do some of this too with the timing. It's always "you have five minutes left" when they clearly had more time than that.
It's just ordering in editing though.
Cartoons are so much more honest than reality TV. I'm glad I never caught that bug
Oh boy, core memory unlocked.
My first sexual encounter was 69ing on the floor while the food network was on. My head game was a lot better than hers, so she couldn't really concentrate on upholding her side of the bargain. There I was, spelling out the ABCs watching Rachel Ray talking about pasta facials.
