1 gallon = 4,54 liter

So diesel 2,16 € x 4,54 liter = 9,72 €

9,72 € exchange rate 1,16 = 11,17 dollar /gallon

My car runs for 40 miles / gallon

I think you used the UK gallon, US should be 3,785411784 litres.
