Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
  • 5. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Language/язык/Sprache
  • This is primarily an English-speaking community. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
  • Comments written in other languages are allowed.
  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.
  • Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
  • We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
  • Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.

Please report posts and comments that break these rules!

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

Nowadays you can use systemd-exorcise for this: exorcisectl --denomination INSERT_YOUR_RELIGION_IDENTIFIER. Please note that some denomination options will automatically withdraw 10% of your yearly income from your bank account as a tithe, and if that fails it will send your server to hell or whatever equivalent you believe in. The command is a no-op for atheists.

The power of sudo compels you!

    May admin rebuke you

Blessing away the French language ...

    systemctl daemon-reload Checkmate.

the one guy on payroll who was there when the whole system was built that you've never seen, but always have heard about

    [–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago

So you get out your VHS camcorder from the 1980s and follow him into the server room along with your friend who is auditioning for a U2 cover band after work.

This is clearly an old image. The new priests expel the demons with systemd

    [–] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

    systemd priests be like:

    homectl show -j | \
      jq -r ".[].userName as $u | \
           .birthDate as $b | \
           select($b < \"$(date -d '18 years ago' +'%Y-%m-%d')\") | \
           $u"

Hmm...splashing around holy water in the server room, what could possibly go wrong? 😬

    [–] notabot@piefed.social 21 points 1 week ago

Well, to be fair, it probably will stop the daemon running if he aims it right.

    [–] SaltyIceteaMaker@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

probably wont do much unless he throws a whole bucket

    [–] mastertigurius@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

In computing and house maintenance I have learned an important thing: the tiniest amount of water in the wrong place can wreak absolute havoc.

    [–] SaltyIceteaMaker@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago

coincidentally, i have had the exact opposite experience: water was onky ever a problem if it was tgere for a long time, and in large amounts

    [–] lauha@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

Plot twist, that broom is made of real plant roots

    [–] Reygle@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (4 children)

I struggle with the idea of someone smart enough to wire a server room being gullible enough to want to "bless" the hardware

    [–] Ithral@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 week ago

You don't sacrifice chickens to keep your DNS gods happy?

    [–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If it doesn't work it's harmless. If it does work, you're out a little water, a few minutes for a ceremony, and might just save untold weekend and evening hours for everyone.

    [–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago

But you also might end up in hell if it's the wrong religion.

    [–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 2 points 1 week ago

I don't think people engaging in things like this are necessarily "gullible." Things for "good luck" (sort of lumping a lot of stuff there since some might view a blessing and luck differently) are a lot about the tradition and ceremony of it. Sometimes it's just fun to do things. Like breaking a bottle on the side of a new ship.

β€˜God of All Machines, today you have judged your servants worthy of your Great Work,’ said Kotov, letting his voice carry over the entire command deck. β€˜And for this we give thanks. Glory to the Omnissiah!’

    [–] Reygle@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Ironically the grim dark might feel like an upgrade from this timeline

It wouldn't be my first time literally praying and asking for blessings before a project.

He's performing the Benediction of the Omnissiah

β€œThese servers ain’t no good I tells ya!”

    WHACK

You shall not pass... into the world of systemd!
