If I could go back, I’d pass on the beheading. Damn morbid curiosity.

everyday I'm thankful I never let curiosity get to the better of me as a kid on the internet

I didn't need to, was walking around at my school when some other student was watching them out in the open on a computer in the hallway

I remember it! Macromedia Flash sucked ass.

No, Flash was a proprietary platform for animated content before the modern web standards. You're thinking of the MP3 player.

Edit: Clearly a poor attempt at setting up someone to reply with "no you're thinking of Winamp, ..."

I’m not sure if you’re being funny and I’m not getting it. Macromedia were the original developers of various web products. Flash and Dreamweaver for example. They were acquired by Adobe and it was renamed to Adobe Flash.

They’re talking about the same Flash you are.

Flash itself was junk. People made some fantastic things with it, though.

Was there an MP3 player named Flash? TIL

Well, at least I wasn't the only one who had that song pop into their head upon reading the post!

I'm fairly sure I saw the same beheading video in 2003. I was convinced it was real. My one friend was convinced it was fake. Our other friend couldn't decide.

Now, with hindsight, I'm STILL convinced it was real, but I'm wondering if what I saw was an early version of what would later become ISIS.

ISIS didn't exist formally yet in 2003, but it's not like they just came from nowhere. I'm fairly confident that I saw an early version of it with that beheading video.

Remember, the Taliban were prominent back then. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taliban

edit: grammar

[–] applebusch@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 11 hours ago

was it... was it the one with the chain saw? I dont really want to remember it but its burned into my memory.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 4 points 13 hours ago

The one I saw around the same time, perhaps a couple of years earlier, was from Chechnia. It has always been a favourite execution method of Islamists. ISIS didn't invent it.

Wikipedia's comprehensiveness always amazes me

My dad sent me that video without any note or warning 😂

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 4 points 15 hours ago

I saw it in that timeframe. Sadly, it's real.. ☹️😭

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 4 points 15 hours ago

it’s not like they just came from nowhere

So a lot of their members were Saddam's party. Part of 'debaathification' involved putting everyone who had been in the party on a list, but the nature of a 1 party state, that includes everyone from professors and traffic engineers to professional throat-slitters and the people managing them. If you were on the list, you could not be employed at any state enterprise. This made anyone whose job didn't have a private sector equivalent, functionally unemployable.

I'm still traumatized from some of those MySpace pages.
