"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Sigh.

Remember when tech news made us think "wow that sounds cool!"?

[–] shani66@ani.social 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Man, they really hate YouTube, seems like it gets worse every single month.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 23 hours ago

they keep throwing fits evrytime thier anti-adblocking measure backfires.

[–] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

I'm already at a point where I ask other people for YouTube recommendations, because the site itself sucks so hard at finding the content I want. I can't trust an AI chatbot to know what other users know, and since one of the criteria I have is "no AI slop" I can't expect an error-prone machine to faithfully find what I need.

It would be nice if the site used all its personal fingerprinting powers to realize that some users don't want to watch the same topic they already watched. I like to explore new information, but these algorithms just take what you already saw and assume you want more of the same. Why not fix that, YouTube? You can try to pipeline the same information to us all you want, but some people are going to go out of their way to explore new content and only finding that possible by talking to other humans. If you want us to trust your recommendations, you're going to need to step up your game - and that doesn't mean AI searches.

What if I don't want to have conversations with YouTube? Wtf is the point of any of this

[–] Ophrys@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 1 day ago

I don't want to talk to my computer, fuck you computer do what I tell you and match keywords

[–] Squizzy@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ever since my android auto moved to gemini it sucks.

"play x by y"

"Got it, now playing x by y on spotify"

plays the theme tune to married with children cover by an ethipian childrens choir.

I fucking hate it. Wordy cunt.

[–] neclimdul@lemmy.world 1 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, don't use auto but used the pucks in a couple places in my house.

Similarly it's failed setting timers despite claiming to and failed broadcasting messages despite also acknowledging them. It's stopped supporting some commands and I don't know anything useful that's added. It just talks more when it already talked too much.

It's just worse in every way.

[–] Squizzy@lemmy.world 3 points 21 hours ago

Voice control is so handy, I wish it wasn't tied to these LLM products. They just get stuff wrong and fluff about it.

Its only use is as a jumping off point for searching, only because they ruined search engines.

This is information suppression and narrative control. On top of algorithms influencing what results you see, you'll now have a chatbot that can be even more strongly biased behind the scenes. Wouldn't expect any better from Google / Silicon Valley. I'm sure the USA's Heritage Foundation and Federalist Society are salivating at the thought.

I. Do. Not. Want. To. Talk. To . Your. Stupid. Clanker.

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 68 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Man, the company that made billions off search seems to want to do everything it can to destroy searching.

[–] myrmidex@belgae.social 31 points 2 days ago (1 children)

As happens with AI, one of the searches (around a Steam Controller) yielded factually inaccurate information

Killing off any trust left in their search engine.

[–] foodandart@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago

Use the web API that you can get at tenbluelinks.org

It cuts the AI chaff right out of the equation.

[–] jadetoffee@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

google search is useless now. i have to append "reddit" to anything i search for

[–] AzuranAurora@piefed.ca 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Same with DDG, which runs off of Bing. Every search is a wall of SEO garbage and commercial websites.

[–] Krauerking@lemy.lol 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It is such a bad search engine now. Like repeating results and just the same AI written article from 12 different sites with names like "monkeyclambake"

[–] AzuranAurora@piefed.ca 1 points 1 day ago

I agree. I'm more and more tempted to switch to Kagi.

[–] Krauerking@lemy.lol 1 points 1 day ago

They were the middle man but they can no longer afford to let you go on to the next page without shoving more ads down your throat.

So now they are just madly running around trying to read all the bullshit they stole so they can pretend they aren't just the middle man but the end point.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Well yeah, because AI will significantly disrupt or kill the old search. It’s a shame they felt the need to triple-down on all the gross moneymakers, and their AI efforts are terrible, but since AI stole everyone’s work and put it into a mega-set that cross-indexes at light speed, the traditional web search is likely to fade.

It’s also partly due to the pop-ups, time-extender tricks, and garbage design of a lot of sites. Clicking one search result after another, scrolling, not finding what is being searched for is not as necessary for boring things.

[–] LiveLM@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago

Lmao they ruined YouTube search already. There's little left to worsen.

[–] Maven@piefed.zip 46 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Why would anyone want this?

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 26 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

It's a solution looking for a problem, and if they can't find a problem, they'll create one.

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 8 points 2 days ago

Well, they sure are making a problem with this...

[–] DoubleDongle@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

They might not even know, but they're really hoping it'll be a lot.

[–] slaacaa@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Line must go up

[–] blinfabian@feddit.nl 4 points 1 day ago

i mean. the youtube search feature cant get any worse than it is rn...

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 28 points 2 days ago

I hate the idea of conversational search so much. Let me use "exact sequences of words denoted by quotes" again!

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago
[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

We don't go on youtube for conversation, we go there for parasocial relationships

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I struggle to think why I would want this instead of traditional search.

"velvet underground live after hours" is a perfectly fine search. it doesn't need to be a conversation.

[–] bcgm3@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

I found several interesting videos about how velvet is made, the song Black Velvet, the movie Blue Velvet, velvet ants, the book The Velveteen Rabbit, the difference between velvet and velveteen, underground dwelling societies, how to build you own underground eel pit, what to do if your coffee grinder isn't grinding your coffee beans to the preferred consistency, Saturday Night Live, live from New York it's Saturday Night, the band Live, living in New York City, the band Live playing live on Saturday Night Live, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, afterbirth, Adobe After Effects, a series of before and after bathroom remodel walkthroughs, how many seconds in an hour, how many hours in a week, the movie The Hour of the Gun, the movie The Hour of the Wolf, the movie The Little Hours, and the televangelist show Hour of Power.

I also found a live performance of the song After Hours by the band The Velvet Underground, but since I don't imagine you wanted that I went ahead and deleted it from the internet.

Also you're out of YouTube Tokens, click yes to purchase more or click no to purchase more or don't do anything in the next 2 seconds to purchase more.

[–] cronenthal@discuss.tchncs.de 16 points 2 days ago

They looked at the piece of trash that is YouTube search and wondered: "How can we make this even worse?"

[–] jadetoffee@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 2 days ago

kepp shoving it down my throat, please. thats how to get people to like your product

anyway, use invidious

[–] _haha_oh_wow_@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

No, God damn it, you already fucked up search results in Google and destroyed the genuinely useful Assistant to foist the dumpster fire that is Gemini on Android users. Don't fuck this up too!

[–] green_red_black@slrpnk.net 6 points 2 days ago

How about you just keep it as a simple search tool and stop being "innovative" with it.
