I hope I never become so befuddled that pushing one chat bubble icon instead of the other is confounding.
I don't understand how some people who are ordinarily reasonably smart just turn into subhuman intelligence when faced with a new computer thing.
My dad is quite elderly and he manages to run ubuntu fine. My mother, on the other hand, gets confused and angry if anything changes at all on her phone or laptop.

My whole family is on signal. How did I get them there? I didn't. Didn't even talk about it. They just popped up, one by one, over the years. Unfortunately we don't celebrate thanksgiving :(

This is why I just designated my phone as the privacy nightmare, no bookmarks, no logins (besides google which is also my designated privacy nightmare email) and no payment details saved on any browsers or anywhere on it other than what's needed by my carrier to pay for my plan. Lets me keep in touch with family while keeping my main PC a bit more secure.
Wife and kids had no problem; they hate people listening to their chats. A couple of slightly paranoid friends came along.
You want to sell it? Tell them all those creepy ads that know too much about them are from Apple/Android chat apps that can listen.
Unless they are going to talk about nuclear cooked turkeys, he could just set up a burner VM and communicate through that and a vpn. That's what I do when going to sketchy sites.

I get where your mom is coming from, but if the 92 year old gamgams all over the rest of the world can use WhatsApp, your gamgam can use Signal with the right direction and patience. People don't give enough credit to the elderly. They're very capable, but just might need a little extra help to get there.
