Stop relying on corporations to back up your art
Fuck AI
"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"
A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.
AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.
easy for you to say
Yes I have a hard drive and a physical folder full of art. Very difficult
-Create new RAR file
-Encrypt
-Password: #fuck$google69
-Copy paste dirty chinese cartoons
-Upload
-Sleep well
~~Also I'm pretty sure deleting/changing the file extension on your files will work too.~~
Just don't use Google for fucks sake!!
Why would the file extension matter?
In theory google's AI will treat files accordingly to what the extension say. For example: If it sees image.jpeg it will treat it as such and will see the picture data. But if you rename it to image.txt it will treat it as a text file and all it will see gibberish.
Any real computer would look at the internal data to determine the type of file.
I figured since AI isn't a real computer (or at least doesn't act like one) but I just tested it with GPT and indeed it did recognize it. So scratch that idea.
Let's say I was trying to use this to make my relatives degoogle and added even an url showing Google's data hoarding and a degoogle alternatives list.
The only thing I got was... "Dad Gave Your Status a ❤️".
it's kinda hard to convince older people to get rid of stuff they already depend on, even if it's as bad as google
My father tested the TikTok spy rumors, proved it, and still passes most of his day doomscrolling on it.
Did Google ever have a support department?
Also, one of many reasons i keep my backups in my own four walls. Granted, if everything burns down, it's gone. But in that case i'm going to have bigger problems than losing my data. Another alternative would be a portable disk locked away at the bank.
Don't rely on the data in a hard drive powered down for a long time being useable when you need it (mechanical or SSD, doesn't matter, both will get corrupted much faster than you'd expect).
You want long term storage, use tape (most optical disks ain't good either).
I’m too cheap for a safe deposit box, but I work in an office and keep a hard disk there. I have two identical ones. One at the office, one at home receiving backups. Every couple of months, swap them out.
off-site physical storage is good praxis
Also If my house burns down then where the hell else am I going fap to porn at? It's useless at that point.
If you must use gdrive: at least encrypt your files.
Stop right there criminal scum!
Encryption means you’re hiding something, and that you’re probably a criminal!
I recently completely finished completely decoupling my life from Google. My GMail account isn't used for anything of importance anymore. People really should take a moment and think about what would be the consequences if Google suddenly mistakenly deleted their account like that. A lot of people's entire lives are connected to their GMail account.
- be me
- want to be able earn and spend money
- need bank account
- online banking is only option
- mandatory usage of the bank's proprietary mobile app for 2FA
- bank blocks evil hacker tools such as GrapheneOS
- app only available for Android or iOS
- Google and Apple can terminate your ability to use any smartphone for any reason
Guys are we really at the whim of just two unregulated private corporations?
This type of thing is why you never 'login with Google, Meta, Apple ' whatever.
If they decide they don't like you for whatever reason you end up locked out of every account, event the ones that are not explicitly Google.
Forgive my bluntness.
...But I feel like "artist tech debt" is now a problem.
I first started complaining about it in the photography space. Basically, no one understands colorspace, HDR formats, HEIFs/JXL, how modern sensors/encoders actually work... everyone is "stuck" in a circa-2000s "crush RAW stills to JPEG, export video to mp4" workflow, like they're in a time loop. They're not even using the crazy dynamic range of modern sensors and displays, and have no clue.
But the more I look around, the more I see it elsewhere. A manga artist choosing Google Drive as their host is a great example.
I dunno what to do about it, though.
