(I know I'm taking the meme too seriously I just want people to feel like they're allowed their emotions :)

You don't actually really need a valid reason to be upset. You just need a valid reason for actions that impact other people.

But you're allowed to just be upset over some shit. Being upset is all the reason you need for the upsetness to be valid. You're entitled to your emotional experience.

It just doesn't neccisarily justify treating others like they did something wrong, or correctly reflect the reality of the world outside your head. Only your experience. But its okay to have that experience anyway :)

Yep! Treating bad feelings or thoughts like crimes you’re not allowed to do or have is how you make your anxiety shoot through the roof and if your unlucky how you end up obsessing over the very thing you told yourself you weren’t allowed to think or feel

Of course. But sometimes it's actually good to introspect a bit about it. People are often upset or stressed and fill in a reason to justify it. Understanding that can help deal with the emotion. Not just bury it; but work through it. Sometimes one can figure out the actual stressor isn't what they think it is, and they can remove the real stressor.

Yeah, a lot of my journey of growing up was learning to just let things go.

Especially things that I felt justified at being upset over, but knew there was nothing to accomplish by holding on to that feeling. All I was doing was making myself feel bad, so the only real available goal was to try and remove that feeling.

Like, as a teenager, Going and getting into an argument with my step father about the way that he decided to talk to me was only going to serve to make us both more upset. I wasn't going to make this 55 year old man be less of a snarky asshole. It simply wasn't going to happen. I was also stuck living with him for at least a few more years.

So just let it go. It's just a source of toxicity to drag me down and make me depressed every time I sit there and stew on it for hours and hours.

Yeah, I definitely agree

The real problem with the Internet is that replying isn't seen as "action" in this sense. And it should be.

And knowing this makes me even more upset without anything to direct my anger at than myself

I don't know about this but I do know I have been worried about something and then forgot what I was worried about but still continued to worry in a general non-specific way out of obligation to the process.

I usually spend 5 minutes retracing my mental steps to figure out what it was, because I have to make sure I keep worrying. Brain, just let it go, goddamnit!

[–] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

Unfortunately that last step is a choice that takes a lot of practice to get good at making
