it's CRAZY how much bigger men are than women

i used to be a pretty big woman, 5'10/180 lbs. then i transitioned. same height (height gain on t is basically not real, unfortunately), and i weigh around 200 lbs. but now it's WAY more muscle (no more boobs + at around 20% bodyfat). i'm built like a fucking tank now, i feel like i occupy so much more space horizontally. my neck and shoulders and arms and legs and everything are so much THICKER

(also, it turns out, men eat WAY MORE than women, too. all this extra mass doesn't support itself πŸ’€ easily need an extra 1000+ calories nowadays)

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 38 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Men eat so much more than women, it’s a little crazy to witness sometimes! My partner is almost always willing to clear my plate after he’s cleared his and I’m so full I can hardly move haha

[–] Fmstrat@lemmy.world 25 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Age and activity level plays a big role here. For instance, a 30-40s mildly active man of avg weight might eat less than a smaller 20-30s active woman.

N of 2, but for example my partner (F) is a bit younger than me (M), and also a cyclist (about 3-4 times my volume of riding). She can easily out eat me, and will finish my plate despite being over 20% lighter than me.

Testosterone is literally a steroid. It's sort of a reductive statement but you don't really think about it often.
It basically acts as a multiplier for the "grow muscle" signals your body can produce.
Men and women can easily have the same outcomes for muscle mass and calorie requirements, but men might not have to work as hard to get there owing to the higher testosterone multiplier on average.

I've also heard that it makes your skin act weird. Several trans people I've talked to have all mentioned that getting their hormones managed made their skin care routine either way easier or harder in a sort of "holy shit" way.

[–] Fmstrat@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

True, and my above statement could be due to testosterone reduction with age in many cases. Testosterone levels also have huge variances in men.

[–] ricecake@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago

100%! I meant my statement as building on yours, not contradicting. :)

Any time you talk about hormones you have to couch everything in a thick layer of "usually", "often", and "tend". Biology varies a lot, and hormones vary more than most of the stuff.

I’ve also heard that it makes your skin act weird. Several trans people I’ve talked to have all mentioned that getting their hormones managed made their skin care routine either way easier or harder in a sort of β€œholy shit” way.

can confirm. skin got 100% softer after testosterone blockers.

The eating thing is too real. I saw an adorable Mexican waif taking her lunch break the other day when I was eating my own lunch. She got some sort of enchilada type thing from Taco Bell, where she works so she can make her own dishes, while I got my normal Supreme Luxe Box.

For comparison, my meal comes with chips and cheese, a taco, a chalupa, a burrito, and a drink. She had a single burrito covered in red sauce. She ate half, packaged it up and took the rest home. I vacuumed up the crumbs from my wrappers.

Admittedly I can probably use her as a dumbbell/ bar weight, provided she can plank properly. I would guess that she is 162-167 cm, and 49-50 kg. I'm 192-193 cm and 104kg

This makes me want to work out more. I'm basically wasting my T on baldness occessonally getting angry when I should be sad lol

i mean, i got a recumbent etrike for getting around town. i get my exercises and my funs in at the same time i do my chores.

i'm incredibly fortunate that where i live has extant infrastructure for that. 20 years ago two lycra dudes got theirselves elected to city council and county controller, uh, i don't remember what those boards are called but they got the infrastructure in. also helped a lot with the homeless programs so like, i like these lycra dudes.

i've recently seen my cousin (22M) eat a whole plate of noodles with sour cream, then another one. i felt like i'm seeing a fire storm eat up a rack of dry wood or sth. meanwhile i eat like 3 tomatoes and am full :P

I'm a largeish dude, 6' 230lb. Sometimes I'll see a person that looks like a baby deer and wonder how we're the same species.

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 46 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Sometimes a person that looks like a baby deer sees you and wants to climb that jungle gym 😏

[–] camembear@sopuli.xyz 17 points 1 week ago (2 children)

As an actual 1.93m/105kg that loves a baby deer to climb me and use me as a jungle gym, we appreciate your energetic enthusiasm.

6'5" here. Because very few people are noticeably taller than I am, when I meet someone who is it's a crazy experience especially 7ft+.

I can recall being stun locked by having to look up at someone much taller than me 5 times total in my 35 years alive so far since middle school.

The opposite doesn't really phase me until I'm physically holding a significant other. Then I'm like holy shit you're tiny! Dunno why it doesn't quite register until then.

Yes, but consider: big women

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 16 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Speaking of, I actually found a partner who's exactly my height. Not that I would've ever said that was a requirement, but it is nice being in a relationship with someone you can just look straight in the eye without moving your head.

The size difference is cool, but only girls who have brothers realize the strength and physical difference. It's even a bigger gap. My sister gets freaked out every time she sees me do something physical.

And I'm not even that big, just very strong.

I dated a girl who had been raised by a single mother, one sister no brothers, then she went to an all-girl's college. At 25, I was her first boyfriend. I'm not sure I convinced her we're the same species. A 5'7" 200 pound man dating a 5'1" 110 pound woman, I was almost twice her size and casually lifted or moved things she utterly couldn't. She very nearly screamed the first time I picked her up.

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 0 points 5 days ago

Not even that big, hm?

[–] harambe69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 week ago (4 children)

This is why most responsible parents drill "never hit girls" into their sons. I thought it was the peak of gender discrimination back in the day, but turns out they're just trying to keep your ass out of jail, so you don't ever fist bump or body slam a girl as hard as you do with your bros. Heck, I've seen girls sprain/break their hands just hitting a guy.

The strength gap can be wild.

A while back at work two of my female colleagues were trying to move a full book cart to another wing of the building. There was a bit higher treshold in one of the corridors and they couldn't raise the cart enough to get the wheels over it. I happened to walk by and offered assistance.

I knelt down to check the wheel height and instantly raised the front of the cart with one hand and guided it over threshold my other hand. While still on my knees.

My colleagues stared at me with a mix of awe and horror, having just realized that what was beyond their combined strength was just an easy task for me. And I'm not even a "strong guy".

[–] BigDiction@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

Also worth noting that men just tend to move heavy stuff more often, so you get practice activating the right muscles and using your leverage efficiently.

My advice has always been for women to strength train. Trust that you will not get bulky muscles accidentally. So many people try to diet and train for that on purpose and never achieve it.

Was with a bigger woman for some time (as in large, not fat, just the right amount of love handles here and there) and it is basically the same thing. I was orbiting her (although we were the same size) and surprised by how cool it is when there is just "more" of a person that you like next to you.

193 / 104 here. Your guy needs to walk more.

[–] nevetsg@aussie.zone 7 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I’m pretty big, and occasionally , tiny people want to take pictures with me. It’s hard to believe we are the same species sometimes

[–] CapuccinoCoretto@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

That's a temporary taxonomic error. Anthropological morphology takes time to digest evidence, but we are speciating as we speak.

a cow is usually 800-1000kg. probably 10-11ft long.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 17 points 1 week ago

My son was a huge teen, just a giant human, and I used to tell my wife that when I was driving him around, I always felt like there was a bear in my peripheral vision.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

As a dude who is 5' 10", aka, basically just a teensy bit over the US average male height...

I am consistently, momentarily confused when anyone in/from the US describes me as 'tall'.

Its almost always a woman that will do this, which makes sense, but I'm still always stun locked for a second or two.

[–] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I’m 5’2”, I prefer guys closer to my own height. Anyone from 5’4” to like 6’ works but that 5’6” to 5’8” is the sweet spot, no huge men for me plz, I’ll leave them to the rest of you

[–] bridgeburner@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Being 5'6", that's reassuring to hear that not I'm not a completely lost case

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm 5'6, bisexual, and have done very well across the spectrum of gender. Height - like weight, hair color, skin color... -doesn't particularly denote attractiveness.

that's new. i'm 5'7"-5'9" depending on how bad my hunch is for the day. my wife is usually a little bit taller than me. most women your height that i tried to date just screamed "are you six feet tall" at me before running away in terror like they'd just watched a non-disney disney movie starring frollo.
