Somewhat skeptical the criminal element is a big user of public transportation.

those in power need to keep their eyes on the poor I guess. Wouldn't want to rising up and demanding something now would we?

Even more of a reason to wear masks on public transit

They fear you, the common people. They need to cope.

It'd only be fair to install facial recognition on cars as well.

Oh wait, you already have Palintir posts on every corner? Go ahead than.

That is aready happening too. A lot of the new cars have ai cameras in them facing the driver. "For safety" because it can dtect when you are distracted. So for surveillance and unsurance.

I don't know if this is the right solution, but a big reason I stopped bringing my family on city buses was because of belligerant personalities making things stressful/scary as fuck on 3 out of my 4 last rides (and less frequently but still really dangerous experiences before that) The frequency was just getting too high and I hit my limit.

Hopefully I just had really shit luck, but if it can happen to me, it can happen to others, and I really want public transit to work.

But all it takes is a system that can't prevent a few rotten apples from spoiling it for everyone else.

Public transit is common in my 3rd world country and I was surprised how more unsafe it feels in the US. My theory is that it is a by product of the car centric society. For one there is safety in numbers and because it is so underused any one person is more exposed. But also because almost the only people that take the public transit is people who cannot drive or be driven for some way or the other it inevitably have a bigger proportion of mentally unstable people for example.

It's sad to say but you get used to it, just like you get used to crazy people on the road. It's actually better because the person isn't operating a ton of metal at 60 mph. Also you can hear/see the crazy ones and try to keep your distance, whereas on the road some guy could be yelling that he's going to kill you for going a bit too slow and you won't know until he cuts you off dangerously close. Like others have said statistically your always way safer on a bus then in a car.

I would be absolutely shocked if these cameras had any actual impact on these kinds of experiences. They're more likely to use it to track "ANTIFA terrorists" (aka, progressives) with it than improve the quality of your business ride.

And “dangerous urban youths”

[–] theparadox@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Obviously their part of BLM... because... you know ...and that's basically ANTIFA!

As a regular public trans rider here in KC, I keep my head on a swivel. I've ridden for years and have only had two dangerous close encounters with homeless people, but as some have said, it's unlikely surveillance will do much to change it. You're probably more likely, statistically, to run into danger driving or riding in a car. (Note that our streetcar line does have armed security though, so that's nice.)

It's security theatre and the footage is probably being sold to train someone's AI model and sent to the fed without a warrant to tag to the profile they have on you.

That said, I carry a stungun for my personal defense, but I 100% would not use public trans habitually without some means of self defense.
