I'm not sure if I'd equate the two downvoted comment threads.

I've found grte's presence on Lemmy to be generally positive, and while I don't know enough about the contents of the argument to weigh in, the comment chain feels like pretty standard political discussion. I got to learn more about the differences between the german and korean subs, and what the prime minister might (or might not) be prioritizing.

Meanwhile, the other comment is flippant and unproductive

It isn't. The German subs are more fit for extended arctic patrols which is a key requirement. The Korean subs advantage was vertical launch cruise missile capability, which is nice, but not a core function. It loses head to head because it would need an unproven Canadianization cold weather package and has limited underwater and stealth run times due to lack of a hydrogen fuel cell. It's lithium batteries are substantial, but not as proven or as capable. The German subs were the obvious choice for those paying attention.

I can't speak to that, I am not a naval expert. I just assumed Carney was never seriously considering the SK option.

Really. The UK, a basket case of a country that is coming apart at the seams, with a separatist party running each of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, gets this kind of treatment but the continent of Africa doesn't even get a guy to go check things out? Despite everyone saying it's set to boom and Carney having a mandate to seek out new trade relationships? Give your head a fuckin' shake.

I'm sure in your mind somewhere, there is a very logic link.

But realize that for everyone outside your bubble, picking between a South Korean's company submarine model and a German's company submarine model has absolutely no relation whatsoever with Africa, and probably not much to do with the UK either.

The point was to illustrate Carney's Eurocentrism with an example, seeing as people seemed to assume my opinion was settled based on the submarine news alone. I wasn't trying to link Africa with South Korea, Germany, or Norway.

And maybe this public 'eurocentrism' might be a good idea with our current negotiations with our largest trading partner who insists we need them.

How major a deal was that, really? 49k cars when we sold 1,918,861 in 2024. (Oh, and significant chunk of those "Chinese" imports are fucking Teslas.)

It was certainly a major PR win for Carney at a time when our anger at the US was boiling over.

That's just it, though. We're ignoring some options. As I've linked elsewhere, we haven't even sent, and are considering eliminating entirely, a trade envoy to Africa. That's a huge blunder on our part. Don't get me wrong, I like (most of) Europe too and of course we should be pursuing trade with the EU. But excessive focus on one region while ignoring another that is set to boom is just, it's dumb. And Eurocentrism is what is driving that mistake.
