Google continues to stress that sideloading isn’t going away. Power users will still be able to install apps from any source they choose. The difference is that unregistered apps will require extra steps, while apps from verified developers should continue to install normally.

I switched to /e/OS and it's glorious. Just ignore their cloud services. You don't need them.

Will graphene get fucked by this too? My plan was to switch over in September but I'm not sure if the changes mean graphene will be made useless.

My understanding is that no... not yet anyway. Phones with GrapheneOS are not "verified" Android so you can proceed to install whatever.

There will b .indirect damage with some devs likely stopping development as their userbase might get smaller still - if they refuse registering with Google.

And I guess there is a future when Google will start tightening the noose on Android itself, which will likely make alternate Android OSs harder to develop (though I know nothing about these things, I sense this is an option down the line).

I lost some functionality with the Fairphone, but it was worth the tradeoff

[–] Zephyr@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago

Guess I'll switch to graphene OS. Oh the horror!!!

The (my) Jolla Phone can't come soon enough. I really hope it holds up to the expectations.

I'd guess 99.9% of Android users have only ever used the Google Play store.

I'm thinking flip phone and taking an old Microsoft surface and putting Linux on it. I don't see any other way to be open source where Google can't fuck around with you.

I would do GrapheneOS, but I figure Google will find a way to block it or wreck it

Apple did that from begining and nobody care

Elaborate? Surely there will still be some hidden option to allow me to sideload APK files?

[–] LeapSecond@lemmy.zip 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

https://keepandroidopen.org/

There will be a hidden workflow but it will require a 24h cooldown period. Even worse, it relies on google services and can be changed whenever Google wants to cut out sideloading completely.

How does this not open them up to a billion dollar class action lawsuit?

I think there is a way to allow this - the way involves a 24h wait time
