😅😅😅. Wtf is even this Owala Shit.

Like

Hello, yes, it's water bottle.

A water bottle designed for people who drink water. You can hydrate fast

😅😅😅. Who's coming up with that shit?

Their FAQs

Does the Owala bottle contain lead?

Like, this is seriously the most frequently asked question?

They don't even have pictures of the opened bottle or how you actually drink from it to show "how to hydrate faster".

The whole thing looks like crazy satire which went to far.

And what a steal. Only 42 € for a fucking water bottle (plus shipping, 'cause why not).

[–] thatKamGuy@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not familiar with Osaka either, but that question about lead makes sense - as that was the cause for the downfall of the previous fad-bottle brand Stanley.

[–] Sp00kyB00k@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Hold up, that one contained lead?

[–] DreadPirateSnuggles@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They use it as a seal plug on the exterior base for the vacuum chamber which is then sealed.

Not ideal but not as bad as it sounds. But still a silly thing to do, especially considering the target audience.

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

They weren't exactly the target audience. It was more like when teenage boys started liking My Little Pony. A complete surprise, but they took advantage of it as well as they could.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The lead question is unfortunately necessary. A lot of vacuum bottles have lead

They're expensive because it's the last one you'll ever need

Every 3 years a new water bottle brand completely oneshots middle class white women like clockwork

There are lots of targeted products and demographics for which this sort of thing is true. My guess is that this is probably very far from the most costly example, though.

My water bottle

I got one as part of a kit for my bike

is determinedly untrendy and plastic, but it looks like these Owala things are $29. If I got one of those instead and did so every three years, that'd be $10/year. Is it necessary or financially optimal? No, probably not, but for perspective, a large pizza is about $30 where I am. The water bottle is probably a healthier unnecessary purchase than the pizza...and I get a pizza a lot more frequently than one every three years.

I mean, the !flashlight@lemmy.world or the !fountainpens@lemmy.world or the !knives@sopuli.xyz or the !EDC@sopuli.xyz people all have their own often-not-really-necessary items that they get and carry around

and most of those tend to be more guy things

that in all honesty are mostly for fun. You could buy a number of these Owala water bottles for what a nice Spyderco knife might run, and you don't need to pay what a Spyderco knife runs to get a sharp bit of metal to have with you.

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You're going to call out !knives@sopuli.xyz and not !pocketknife@lemmy.world? Hey, now.

We are committed to getting people to spend money on dumb shit over here.

I've been using nalgene bottles forever because I like my water room temperature. Im probably 80% microplastics now.

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I carried one for like a decade, I've got a couple of metal bottles that I've had for years now too.

I think we are all fully marinated in petroleum byproducts.

Funny enough this seems rather accurate according to this article. Graphic below from the article linked.

People were drinking water out of those stanley "cups"?

Also as a German, where are:

That chart is a bit outdated. That might be the millennial moms that pick up the trend late.

All the white Gen Z girls at work have HydroJug now. Owala was a a while back. Stanley was more covid era.

My wife has a fuckin entire cabinet dedicated to her damn cups.

[–] Echolynx@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

HydroJug

Why do they all look like copycats...

[–] Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

Because they basically are. There's only so many ways to design a double walled vacuum insulated cup lol.

I gave away everything but a bowl to hold my water, but I saw a boy drink water from only his hands.

How have become so materialistic?

[–] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

Quit blocking my Sun.

[–] hkspowers@lemmy.today 24 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I purchased an RTC stainless steel insulated tumbler in 2015. It's the only cup I ever use and it's still going strong after daily use and still looks brand new. Was 20 bucks (they were clearly undercutting Yeti at the time). It's been a solid purchase, I think the same cup from them now runs 40 bucks on Amazon.

Then again I'm still using the same plastic ninja turtle bowl I got from a box of Cookie Crisp cereal in 1988... So anything will last a very long time with care.

Back when there were cool goodies in cerial boxes. I miss those days. I especially remember getting Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 on CD once.

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago

They had to stop that because they were targeting kids and forcing sugary cereal on them with bribes.

[–] M137@lemmy.today 13 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Middle class white women are like men who only play AAA shooters or sports games and kids with most things; they see something that's becoming popular and latch onto it like parasites and make it their whole personality.
There are many other groups of people loke this bit I'm too fucking tired ATM and already in bed to list any more, it's all just a never ending thing.

[–] Eheran@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

But how to clean it properly inside?

[–] Janx@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

That's the neat thing...

oh lol. they got my wife at stanley.

she bought 4 (one for everyone in the family) at $40 a piece. in protest, I bought about 10 used quality water bottles from my gyms lost and found sale for $1 each.

all u could see in our cabinets were water bottles. I think my wife gets that we have enough now so I'm safe from the next version...
