Are Muppets good or is this more of a nostalgia thing for people?

I've never seen Muppets. I don't remember it airing on our national TV when I was a child. It's not much of a thing in my social circles either.

[–] Aneb@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (4 children)

I rarely see the Muppets but they were a cultural cornerstone for the 90s-00s. My older sisters can name everyone while I can name Kermit, Miss Piggy, Bert and Ernie, and cookie monster (use to be my favorite Friendly's sundae). Wait is Elmo and yellow bird also muppets?

[–] FudgyMcTubbs@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Do we not separate Muppets muppets from Sesame Street muppets? The only Muppets muppets you mentioned were Kermit and Miss Piggy. Also the yellow bird from Sesame Street is Big Bird.

The Muppets muppets were more of an 80s thing, and then they spawned movies. Kermit, Miss Piggy, swedish chef, fozzie bear, animal and so on are Muppets muppets.

They're all one thing. Kermit used to show up on Sesame Street as a newscaster. And Big Bird shows up in the Muppet Movie from the 70s. Jim Henson and Frank Oz did both.

I like the chaotic energy they bring on screen.

Also not officially Muppets shows, but look at Farscape and Labyrinth. Chef d'oeuvre!

The Muppets are good. Very entertaining for all ages. But these remakes are nothing but a money grab. No new story line, a few rewrites, toss in a few jokes, get nostalgic movie goers to buy tickets and make a bunch of money.

The Muppets are more than good enough to deserve their own new stories and not just rehashed garbage.

Personally, I think they're good. Obviously it's subjective, but I think there's a good reason that they've withstood the test of time.

The brand of humor is timeless. The absurdity of a world where a pig and a frog can take on human roles without comment is just as funny now as it was 40 years ago. The overall style of humor is somewhat dry but still accessible.

It's not for everyone, but it's for a lot of people.

The best adult film (clip; I’m not a millionaire) that I’ve seen in a while featured a muppet. I wouldn’t cry over a remake.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 week ago

why stop at just a 'clip'?

Can muppets consent? This only gets worse if you keep interrogating

[–] JizzmasterD@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago

Talk to the hand?

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 4 points 1 week ago

Can muppets consent?

Absolutely. They're constantly getting fisted.

Muppet centipede? Human centimuppet?

Heck I just hope they do restart the Muppet Show. The soft pilot was pretty good, actually got me to watch a Sabrina Carpenter performance, and Seth Rogen's punchability is at an all-time low. Come on Disney. (I hate saying those words)

[–] Rivermoonwolf@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Muppet Hudson Hawk. Everyone BUT the Hawk is a Muppet.

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

The musical bits! You genius!

Got my vote.

Why is there a second "No" after the first "Yes?"

[–] owenfromcanada@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yes on the first question and No on the second question both lead to the end node Don't bother

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I posit we could remake some (not all) of the Muppet movies and still get good movies. Not the one with Tim Curry, that one had Tim Curry in it. Can't be improved upon.

[–] owenfromcanada@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Muppet Treasure Island has been in my top five movies of all time for as long as I can remember. In addition to Tim Curry, it has one of my favorite exchanges in all of cinematic history:

"It just feels weird."

"What? That Captain Smollet is dead?"

"Yeah, that... and my pants are filled with starfish."

"...you and your hobbies!"
