Everyone 40s or younger where I work is so clearly sick of the shit. None of us are making as much as the older folks and they still go by the “good ole boy” system. I’m just grateful that we can control our own area, we take off whenever (provided we have the time), and our direct boss treats us well. Glad to see the kids these days understand this shit isn’t worth it anymore and are acting accordingly.

A vast, vast amount of work in modern economies just objectively does not need to be done for any good reason, but is performed to keep capitalism from collapsing in on itself.
And typically the less money someone makes the more vital they are for society to function.
I contributed 14 (out of 60) points to trivia today.
Working at evil asshole inc is a blessing in disguise...fuck up a little here and a little there. Not enough for anyone to notice but enough that if everyone is fucking up the entire company can do the opposite of thrive while still giving you money. Investors don't like that.
This is how we win over AI enshitification.
It really is hard to find a job where you can go home at the end of the day and feel like what you did that day has benefitted the human race at all.
Why do we have to sell our soul just to survive?
Capitalism
I would literally rather work with dozens of people in violent psychosis than work with one developmentally normal modern-day child.
Mm yes, he forgot to mention the silly extra requirements of food and shelter.
Ahh yes, the ultimate straw man. Everyone will go homeless and die if they go into another profession. How could I forget.
Lotta irony in this comment.
Please do not become a teacher unless you really really enjoy it. It is a fucking hard job. You will be working way more hours in real life than on paper. You will need to play a thousand different roles for hundreds of kids. You will be emotionally destroyed day to day. You will need to be able to listen to kids as they explain why they are considering suicide or trying to figure out what to do since they got pregnant.
You will be asked to not only teach but plan, grade, do extracurriculars, stay after school for kids who cant get a quick ride home, etc.
So many people try to get into this job because its a way to genuinely feel good about your work. And it is. But you have to be a bit masochistic to do it and you have to really fucking love it.
I can't imagine doing anything else, but the amount of burnout Ive seen in my career is unreal. People do not know what they are getting into.
So with that said, if you try it and arent happy after a few years, please dont stick it out. Its unfair to yourself and the kids you teach. Ive seen it too many times.
Yes, but I reckon that also stems from being understaffed and to a lesser extent, underpaid.
If you had more colleagues to divide the workload and if classrooms had fewer kids the job would probably be a lot less stressful.
Gosh darn reality making things hard.
Your point?
My point is that what you’re saying in these comments has little basis in reality.
“It’s not that hard” is a painfully ignorant stance to take.
I mean it definitely is. Yes those jobs have openings now, but if too many people switch then suddenly there are no more openings.
Also both of those positions require specific education and certifications. It's not always that easy to drop what you're doing and entirely reinvent your career
I'll also note that there are a number of nurses that feel that they can't actually make a difference because their days are spent running appeals against souless insurance companies or that anecdotally they just spend their time being yelled at by patients. I've also talked with teachers that have complained about sacrificing so much for the kids they teach only to have those very students abuse them or steal from them.
These folks are definitely more likely to actually make a difference, but it is far from easy or rewarding most of the time.
Well that’s a hypothetical situation and extremely unlikely to happen. So let’s not explore that. For an individual, you, or the OP and with the proper training it’s definitely not that hard to land a job that’s more meaningful.
Of course different jobs require different training, but that is very doable as well, especially since the trading programmes for both of these jobs will have you working on the floor within a year or even a few months as an intern.
And it gets even easier once you realize it is a choice between doing something you hate 8 hours per day for 40 or so more years vs. doing a fulfilling job and contributing to society, which requires a little effort. The biggest effort is putting yourself to doing it.
You are still making some very big assumptions on how easy it is to drop a career and swap to a new one. Do people do it? Yes they do, but it's not easy.
Once you have things like a family, car payment, mortgage, etc. It can be really hard to restart.
Also being a registered nurse takes 4 years plus certifications. Being a teacher varies wildly state to state.
You are definitely approaching this from a mindset of being either just in college or early/no career and having low liabilities/commitments in life. Which if that's where you are I encourage people in that stage of to seek out something rewarding. It only gets harder the longer you wait in life and the more you develop the career you are in.
And you are making assumptions on how hard it would be. In reality, people do it all the time. The hard part is breaking the habit and getting out of the comfort zone. And to not have to get out of that comfort zone, people throw up barriers for themselves, making it seem harder than it is.
Even you are trying to make it seem worse than it is, citing a four-year training when I just told you that during that training the trainee nurses are usually working on the floor in paid internships within a year.
So like I said, the hard part is not the actual switch, but the mental process to start the switch, getting out of the groove that you’re stuck in and overcoming perceived barriers that you built up in your own mind.
Obviously there will be actual barriers for some people. And timing may not be right for everyone, like for parents with a newborn, but once kids grow older it will become easier. Partners can work a little more for a few years to fill in the gaps. It’s not like most people will become homeless if they have a little less income during their training.
Anyway, what the OP said was that it would be hard finding a job that benefits society. And finding the job isn’t very hard once you’re trained.
Once again being an RN is a 4 year degree. Are you thinking of LPN? Internships are usually the last year of the program.
I know RN is a total of 4 years, but it’s simply not true that Clinicals usually only start in the last year. Maybe in the past, but nowadays it starts a lot sooner.
Depending on the nursing program—whether ADN, BSN, or accelerated—clinicals may begin as early as the first semester or as late as the second year.

And that still doesn’t disprove what I said about the availability of nursing jobs. I’m getting a bit tired of this moving of the goal posts.
Nursing school is incredibly difficult both to get into and to complete. There may be a lot of nursing jobs available in your area for this very reason.
You are both missing the point. It’s not about nursing specifically. It’s about the fact that there are plenty of jobs that contribute something to society if you’re willing, whether it’s nursing or teaching, or something very different. Nursing is just one example and I’ve already spent too much time on it, since it’s not the point.
It’s easy to complain about how hard something is and only a little less easy to make a change. But people don’t want a little less easy. I was just calling that out, but that message obviously doesn’t earn you any points on Lemmy, QED, but it’s no less true.
It doesn't matter how willing you are. Nursing schools do not accept just any willing person. When it comes to actually doing the job... it takes a whole lot more than just being willing. The average person CANNOT be a nurse. It's just a very tone deaf and unrealistic thing to suggest.
It’s easy to complain about how hard something is and only a little less easy to make a change.
Intelligence and emotional ability are not the result of willpower. It's actually more comparable to being athletic or physically strong. Sure, most people can improve their physical health, but there is a threshold for how strong you're capable of becoming, determined by genetics and lifestyle. Intelligence and emotional capacity are the same. It's sort of like you showed open positions for being a bodybuilder or an MMA fighter and then said "see? there are plenty of jobs." This makes no real-world sense.
What a banger, good job op
found it on the internet :) but a compliment is a compliment, i'll take it
Anyone that demands another person get a job is psychotic
Psychosis isn't being a dickhead. It's suffering from delusions and/or hallucinations. It can be really stressful to go through because the delusions are often paranoid ones, like that the government planted a chip inside your body and you need to dig it out with a knife. It's serious business.
So sociopathic?
Get a job
Yeah like this guy
Wait until you meet the department heads. They're sharks with frikkin later beams attached to their heads.
But if I get a job the government will stop sending checks!
I hate them so much
Hmm... I would prob work for Doofenshmirtz too tho
