Bye

You crazies won and proved me wrong. The fediverse isn't worth saving after all.

Over the course of the last several days, I have received a constant stream of harassing messages, death threats, and threats of doxxing over DM, Matrix, Github, and Codeberg. All of it instigated and eggged on by another instance's top admin. This is unacceptable for all of the reasons in the world, and while I won't give you the personal satisfaction of having won, you've definitely proven me wrong about the fediverse being something that even can be saved from itself.

Even people around here I'd interacted with positively for years and had grown to respect because they seemed level headed and above the immature and sociopathic bullshit that dominates this platform showed their true selves. That completely shattered any and all illusions I had that this place has a hidden core of users that I should try to make more visible amongst all the rage, rage baiting, propaganda, harassment, rumor mongering, trolls, conspiracies, purity testing, and violent rhetoric.

Like many of the rational people before me who called this place home, I'm done with this place.

I tried to carve out a space where those people and other rougher edges were not drowning out niche communities and hobbies and where people who choose to use the platform to harass others were also out of sight, out of mind. Apparently only three people who aren't me actually want a place that's not just a circle-jerk of rage and hate. Thus sayeth the mob.

Then you have entire instances whose admins call for the death of others, harass other users, and lead harassment, brigading, and DARVO campaigns against those who dare call out their bullshit or decide to disassociate themselves and their work from them.

Lemmy.World was so close to doing the right thing after instance-that-will-not-be named's admins were calling for the death of LW's admins while spreading rumours and labeling others in such a way that painted them as targets for murder. All of that, mind you, with absoultey no evidence other than specuation and their own cooked-up conspiracies about modlog actions or taking and twisting things wildly out of context to fit their made-up narratives so they had someone to say they 'caught' and should be killed.

.world was on the precipice of doing the right thing and disaccociating themselves from that psychotic shit show, but silently dropped the issue and carried on as usual after wringing their hands for maybe two weeks.

"We have to worry about the optics or the politics of it." they probably said.

Bullshit.

I'm one person and have held my fucking ground, mostly with dignity and grace, in the heat of my own shitstorm of trying to disaccociate from the extremist elements of the fediverse. If I can stand up for what's right and deal with the blowback, so can you.

Fuck lemmy world's admin team for condoning that behavior and letting the human skidmark db0 DARVO his way out of the situation while brigading with his army of malcontents whom he wields like a cult leader. He knows exactly what he is doing, and you all continue to allow him to get away with it.

Nah, fuck this whole place. I've let too many things fall by the wayside IRL because of dealing with all this fediverse bullshit and trying to give it the slightest bit of polish both visually and atmospherically. Mythbusters may have proven that you can, in fact, polish a turd, but at the end of the day, it's still a shiny ball of shit.

For the few people left who didn't turn out to be psychotic, I'll think of you from time to time when recalling something you've posted or commented that genuinely made me laugh, made me think, or otherwise put a smile on my face or in my heart.

Everyone else, though, enjoy your toxic, xenophobic, knee-jerk-to-violence, purity-testing, and harassing-anyone-who-doesn't-fall-in-line cess pit. One day you, too, will do or say something that doesn't toe the line and you'll be right where I am.

P.S. Rimu, you owe me a beer. No one is talking about the Piefed vote quotas anymore, so you're welcome.

I'm not at all okay with the harassing messages, threats of doxxing and death threats. I'm also not okay with what this cunt has done.

[–] El_Scapacabra@lemmy.zip 6 points 35 minutes ago

Okay but I'm confused though. How are we all still posting here now that the main character has left the fediverse?

[–] Master@sh.itjust.works 7 points 44 minutes ago

I wasn't on the list afaik but this guy was bad for the fediverse and its not a big loss to have them go. The last thing lemmy needs is another bad actor writing software that is being used by the community.

Good riddance.

[–] Microtonal_Banana@lemmy.zip 2 points 17 minutes ago

It has been fun learning about the inner workings of the fediverse in such a dramatic fashion. 🍿

[–] DistrictSIX@lemmy.zip 27 points 1 hour ago

If everyone you encounter is an asshole, guess who the real asshole is.

He ain’t going anyplace. He’ll just use a different account.

I'm just glad to have been around to witness the biggest loser on the fediverse crash out. Terrible stuff, but a wonderful show

oof I have never seen such a high concentration of accusations in the mirror

[–] tomi000@lemmy.world 8 points 1 hour ago

I am always amazed by the lack of mental capacity of people who believe 'everyone else is evil' is more likely than 'I am wrong about a single one of my beliefs'.

[–] FalschgeldFurkan@lemmy.world 69 points 3 hours ago

Imagine hiding a blacklist of users as well as a fucking DDoS script on your frontend, then trying to act as if you're the "good guy" lmao.

I really wonder though what he means with "xenophobia on Lemmy", especially since his blacklist seemed to have served transphobic purposes

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 13 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Maybe don't include a obfuscated (and clearly politically motivated) blacklist of half of lemmy?

But seriously, who did harassing, death treats? That's not ok and he should have named them.

[–] GarboDog@lemmy.world 6 points 1 hour ago

Cant name someone who doesn't exist. Just something he threw in to make everyone else look bad/feel bad about the situation he dug himself into.

[–] antsu@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 hour ago

Archive.today ass move (for the DDOS thing)

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 37 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

a hidden core of users that I should try to make more visible amongst all the rage

Good riddance. If there is any lesson anyone should take, it is that Fediverse does not tolerate when one person decides what others get to see.

Various people attempting this is why we got Fediverse in the first place.

[–] khaleer@sopuli.xyz 9 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

oh yeah, totally, you proved to be an angel among turds, go back to sucking billionaire propaganda and enjoying your basement

[–] finallymadeanaccount@lemmy.world 26 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

This sounds suspiciously like a power-tripping ex-Reddit mod, who found themselves on the wrong side of a Reddit bot ban, and gravitated to Lemmy, bringing with them the sense of entitlement, haughtiness, and ridiculous God Complex the worse Reddit mods carried. And, upon realising that shit don't fly here, chucked a tanty, and piddled with impotent anger and thoughts of vengeance, like a rabid locust.

Maybe they'll be happier at Digg?

[–] MoonRaven@feddit.nl 1 points 1 hour ago

Digg shut down and became an AI platform.

[–] roboflop@feddit.uk 3 points 1 hour ago

I hope this prick fucks off the hole he crawled out off

Now, thanks for the dev for last few days of engaging content.

I've been alive for more than a half of an average lifespan already, and working over 20 years I've met guys and gals who have not had the ability to read or predict social cues nor understand how some acts will look like for outsiders.

My own kid is on the spectrum with a diagnosis so I've read and studied quite a bit on the matter. This might sound harsh, but in the long run I think telling the truth will help the guy. I guess the dev in question here is either young or on the spectrum. Both are alright and we all make mistakes.

Censorship because people dont fall in line with your expectations or beliefs is not right. You will learn that along the way. I was more black and white, right or wrong 20 years ago. Getting married, travelling the world, having kids will even out straight edges. You will find grey between the black and white.

Just walk away if the internet feels too burdensome. Open source is absolutely great, but dont forget that people on the internet are clever, and sometimes even more clever than you, or me for that matter.

Kind of funny to be on the exclusive list. If you dont feel right apologising, thats alright. And even if you dont want it or need it, I still forgive you for trying to censor me.

Just remember though, shitposting is forever.

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 19 points 3 hours ago

All this from the one who thought people saying "perchance" deserved to be treated the same as the so-called violent extremists. Stopping people from saying "perchance" isn't fucking "saving the fediverse."

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 5 points 2 hours ago

Open source developer downfall speedrun, 100%.

[–] zr0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 35 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

Everybody can create a frontend that filters out certain words or users on purpose, for the goal to have a “nicer” experience.

But why hide it? Why even go that far to load it at runtime, so that it is not visible in the source code? And why hiding a DDOS script, targeting one instance, while saying they are the “normal one”?

What a psychopath. And they will be back soon enough unfortunately.

[–] HereIAm@lemmy.world 10 points 2 hours ago

It's like he doesn't realise one of the main reasons people left reddit is exactly because of this type of hidden censorship like shadowbanning.

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 7 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Honestly, if you feel concerned about the state of the Fediverse and the good vs ugly about it, suggest a filter list!

Let users/instance admins decide whether they want to implement such lists or not. If you genuinely believe such filtering makes for a better experience, users will love it.

Just don't force your decisions onto them. It's that easy.

[–] zr0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

That actually sounds like a sane feature the lemmyverse should provide. I also don’t like some instances and come communities, because they are led by extremists, but for that I can just block them on my client. However, I believe it would be nice to have community manage lists.

Hi, lurker here. Anyone kind enough to give me some context? Who’s that guy? What happened?

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 13 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (2 children)

Developer of Tesseract front-end for Lemmy hid a blacklist in the code without an announcement.

This blacklist contained various Lemmy instances (particularly leftist/anarchist ones, and also blahaj.zone, known for protecting LGBTQ+ rights, and particularly a place trans lemmings unite) and users.

This was quickly uncovered by db0, since their instance had Tesseract front-end available and they got in the blocklist, making the front-end unavailable for them. They quickly forked Tesseracts and ringed the bell.

Following was blocked users bragging about getting in the block list like a badge of honor, and others being sad they didn't make it into one. This was pretty much a hot topic around these places for about three days straight. Some also apparently bombed Tesseract dev's inbox with things ranging from "why?" to "go fuck yourself", which seems to trigger the dev to leave the space entirely.

This comes not long after a similar attempt was made by PieFed developer (referred by Rimu who owes a beer), causing a similar stir, and also them introducing vote quotas to further alter the PieFed (Lemmy-compatible software used to communicate to PieFed and Lemmy users) landscape to amplify certain messages.

[–] Kraiden@piefed.social 3 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

wait, what's this about a piefed dev doing something similar?

[–] mathemachristian@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 19 minutes ago* (last edited 19 minutes ago)

Going off memory as far as I know, piefed dev is very opinionated and hardcodes stuff in, gets backlash, and only then makes it opt-out. He doesn't like certain instances so they are defederated by default. A huge huge list of websites so they are blocked by default and afaik it's not possible to just empty the list with a button click, you have to do a manual database transaction or remove them one-by-one. There's like a belgium filter to There's like a whole rigmarole to setting up a piefed instance that is at 0 opinion in order to be able to go from there. But I think most damningly is the ability to ban users without it showing up in the modlog and not showing reasons for bans unless the instance issuing the ban is on an allowlist.

This was quickly uncovered by db0,

The fact that it blocked instances yes, but the list itself was in for almost a year with no one noticing.

[–] mathemachristian@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

Lol someone link this guy my comment pls, he can't see it because I got instance-banned from piefed.social for some reason I still don't know.

Some guy makes a semi-popular front-end for lemmy. He then sneaks in a blocklist that goes unnoticed for almost a year. It gets discovered when he blocks entire instances from using the front-end by an admin trying to troubleshoot why the front-end won't work on his instance. Drama unfolds but shit really hits the fan when it gets discovered that the major portion of the blocklist isn't even hardcoded, it gets pulled from the devs own server. The dude made a centralized secret blocklist that he can update however he wants and people won't even know they're on it. He is blocking comments containing keywords, whole communities, users he doesn't like, it's wild. He can effectively shadowban across the entire platform (well everyone using his front-end) with no oversight, no accountability.

People didn't even know they were shadowbanned by him, no reason is given, no path to get off the list is mentioned. So now people are pouring over the list hoping to be one of the cool ones that got blocked (I was in the OG blocklist back when it was part of the code 😎) and are really fucking pissed off. So he throws out some long letters telling people he isn't mad at all and the last one apparently contains a piece of code to make anyone who views part of a DDOS attack on db0, the instance whos admin first made this list publicly known.

[–] Gonzako@lemmy.world 5 points 3 hours ago

Developer of popular front end added a hidden blocklist blocking out most political discourse. He RQ cuz he got found out.

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 72 points 5 hours ago

You crazies won and proved me wrong.

Also:

I won't give you the personal satisfaction of having won

Cool story.

[–] 13igTyme@piefed.social 3 points 2 hours ago

So this is what all those memes about being on some list was all about.

Okay, I guess.

[–] Folstar@lemmus.org 44 points 5 hours ago

Is this the stupid bitch who decided to try to shadow censor other people's experience? That's some insane projection. Bonus points for including the DDOS just to leave no doubts.

[–] TanteRegenbogen@feddit.org 0 points 49 minutes ago

While he did absolutely dumb shit and is wrong about the Fediverse (what many Reddit refugees fail to understand is that the Fediverse doesn't just consist of Lemmy, mbin/kbin and piefed, but a lot more such as mastodon, misskey, pixedfed, peertube and so on), a lot of people from dbzer0 and .ml did act like asses and did more than just criticize Admiral Patrick. However he did totally overreact to criticism and both sides kept escalating.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 21 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

If I can stand up for what’s right

Yeah, secret undisclosed baked in unexplained banlists. What a "dignified and graceful" way to stand up for something, definitely not underhanded, sneaky and authoritarian.

Bye bye you won't be missed. In the meantime try to become an adult, you seem like a teenager

I believe this is what is called a self-correcting system. It's the immune system. A cancer was attempting to prevent resources from reaching their intended cells and the immune system kicked in and exposed the cancer to the best disinfectant. Sunlight.

Expose all the bigots friends. They're scared of actual free speech and people's rights and freedoms because that breaks their ability to oppress and subjugate others.

And oh yeah, I was on the list. Probably for stuff like the above I just said lol.

[–] volore@scribe.disroot.org 82 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Holy shit this crashout keeps getting funnier and funnier. "I have held my ground with dignity and grace" says the man imposing hidden block lists on users of his frontend; having a very public bitch-fit about the backlash for this; and, now, DDoSing another instance with more hidden code. Truly the pinnacle of dignity and grace.

Given this is his second time ragequitting the fediverse, what's the over/under on him crawling back, y'reckon? I give it more than a month, less than six.
