I haven't even thought about it. I know where to find the games on the high seas and emulators are my preferred mode of play, although there are probably ways to run them on original hardware.
If buying isn't owning, then piracy isn't stealing.
I have enough content in emulators alone that it would be pretty damn easy to just stop buying consoles and big studio titles entirely. Which I guess I've kind of done already.
Hell even if you forbid old PC games, my AuDHD ass could bounce between Chrono Trigger and Symphony of the Night for years.

If you buy a game as a kid, play the fuck out of it, then end up tossing that console in a box or closet for a decade as you grow up, then when that nostalgic urge to play your old game again hits you should be able to plug the console in and play again. Not be told that your Xstation account was deleted because you didn't log in as ButtholeSurfer696969lol in the last few years so all of those purchases no longer exist.
Stop buying videogame consoles. The companies making the consoles think you are all 12 and treat you like you were born yesterday.

Bruh I cleaned my PS2, turned it on after being in storage for a decade, and it remembered what time/date it was. That CMOS cell battery is a goddamn king
And of course, discs and memory cards. I'm sure some folks' digital PS2 mods are also solid, and aren't affected by one of the weakest links, the read laser.
If the PSN account was deleted, this is less a PS3 issue and more a digital software licensing issue.
i would say that it’s a PS3 issue due to being dependent on licensing issues prevent a user from playing games they own
Just plugged it in and gave it a try... My NES still works... The "just plugged it in" part was a bit tedious,.. finding the right adapters,,😅🤣
I booted up my PS3 recently and everything worked as it did last time I turned it on, in like 2014. It needed a firmware update for the Blu-Ray player to play a Blu-ray my partner got, so I installed CFW. Now it works great forever! But even before modding it, I booted up into some random stuff. It remembered where I was, after modding, on a Blu-ray movie I didn’t remember watching!
About a decade ago they discovered a lost tablet that adds 20 "new" lines to the Epic of Gilgamesh. Four millennia, and all they had to do was dust it off and translate it. Stone tablets turn out to be a very good medium for preserving culture.
Video games is also a cultural medium - video games are also pieces of culture. They should not be intentionally made to be lost to time.
My Nintendo DS Lite is still in perfect working order despite not having been turned on for 5 years!
The dickhead replying is so fucking dumb. If the console was physically broken in any way, then the discussion could be about planned obsolescence or regular wear and tear or how it was stored. But the console DID survive. It did "resume back to normal", but it is artificially rendered worthless by the company.
We could talk about how long a console should physically last, with issues like the red ring of death being an example of them not lasting long enough, but the idea that Sony says you didn't play frequently enough so you no longer own the things you paid for is absurd.
My PS Vita spent years in a closet, I charged it and it was as good as new (maybe the battery needs to be swapped), so yes.
Most recent console I have used (and still use frequently) is a Gameboy Color from 1998. Original hardware (I did replace the screen).
Last game I finished was Pokemon yellow on an original cartridge. Worked fine, after 25+ years (with a new cartridge battery).

Everything about modern console gaming has been frustrating. I'm trying to help my kids, but having physical media hard to find, never-ending account creation, and then features locked behind online stuff, that you then have to subscribe to the console company to play anything online? What have we done?
