Good grief, has she not seen all the advances in medical technology in the last 50 years? Life saving technology? How can someone with such high qualifications be this stupid?

And on a side note, she also says ‘AI is for everyone’. if AI is for everyone, why doesn’t she champion for companies to stop putting AI technologies up behind paywalls and subscriptions? 🤔

She's selling to a room full of investors and buyers lol, what do you expect?

If AI weren't around, they would have said the same thing for whatever biggest new feature they were presenting like FSR or Nvidia with ray tracing.

IDK what medical technology post-1976 have been transformative the way computers have been. Yes of course some people have survived serious injuries or illnesses that might have been fatal before, but the average person isn't affected that much. I'd put the internet at #1 since computers today are basically enhanced versions of ones from 1976. Solar power might be another one (massive deployments now, and it's the cheapest way to generate new electricity). AI shouldn't be sneezed at though. It may turn out to be like global warming, affecting almost everyone in bad ways rather than good.

You said computers in the general, but the critique was about current general today I technologies and not the computing revolution.

Yes, I understand that, I'm just saying that the average person is more affected by computers and the internet than by million dollar gene therapy treatments.

It's too early to tell the long term effect of AI but I think it's not good. It could be the most important technology of 2020-2070 in the same way that the nuclear bomb was perhaps the most important technology of 1945-1995. Even though it fortunately didn't get dropped on anyone else after 1945, it had a bad effect on everyone, the whole cold war revolved around it, etc.

Me: Hmm, I'd put the internet ahead of medical advances. It's too early to tell with AI. Lisa Su might end up being right, but in a bad way.

First off, the person who posted the article and commented is different than the first person who replied to your comment and I am a third user.

Second, the poster said advancements in medical technology is more important than AI. Medical technology includes all kinds of things like diagnostic tools, massive advancements in vaccines, the internet for sharing data, and all kinds of things that affect everyone. It was one example of something far more important than AI.

Oh ok I didn't follow the attributions. Still, it's hard to say Lisa Su is wrong, at least from a future perspective. Today, if AI (let's say post-2023 for the modern sense of AI) disappeared, we'd be rid of some AI slop but not all that much else would change. If we ask the same question in 2060, what answer do we get? IDK. If she said past 20 years instead of past 50, she'd probably be right. Amazon in 2006 was crushing local retail more or less the same way as now.

No I don't believe that sharing data by internet is a medical technology advance. MRNA vaccines are a real advance, but without them, we'd still have attenuated-virus vaccines like the Johnson & Johnson Covid vaccine. MRI was first developed in the 1970s, putting it in the 50 year window but not by much. Gene therapy is new but ultra specialized. There have been huge advances in cancer treatment, probably more important. I would say psychiatry and mental health understanding have gotten a lot better in the past 50 years and that's important, but it's hard to call that a technological advance per se.

Well not just medical tech: I would argue that other fantastic tech has revolutionised the world in the last 50 years.

To answer your question, on the medical advances in the last 50 years include the invention of or enhancement of:

-MRI scans -Vaccines such as mRNA and Covid-19 -Gene-editing techniques -surgical robotics And more

Vaccine advances have definitely been important, good call. The other stuff mentioned is technologically advanced but affects relatively few people. Most of us haven't needed MRI scans, robotic surgery, etc. I've had a few conventional X-rays but never an MRI.

I've sometimes thought about this question (usually with the timeframe 20 years rather than 50) because of the extreme cost of health care in the US. Most of us can stay healthy without the latest tech interventions.
