My friend who built 128GB home server in 2024.

I did my rebuild before January 2025 cause I thought DJT was going to fuck up world trade, I underestimated how shitty the AI Bros are.
I have 16GB of VRAM too, baybee.
I live in fear one of the memories will stop working
Now i feel poor

My 2023 framework 16 is rocking 64gb.

"94 bytes should be enough for anyone"
I keep telling my wife that. She's not buying it
2024 I built my NAS with 2 x 16gb sticks, 2 x 32gb sticks for 94?gb of RAM. I got lucky.
Same with drives 14tb ironwolf pros, £200-220 each now £400+ each and I need 5 more of the fuckers.
I just bought 24gb of ram (I work in IT and it's always good to have some extra 8gb sticks).
it got stolen since the USPS delivery person couldn't be bothered to follow directions and leave it inside. and I can't get my money back :(

I'm currently in the middle of building a ITX machine for my partner so she can play games with me. Ran into a mate of mine the other night who due to a mix up at the retailer had a spare 16gb kit of brand new DDR5-5200 and was looking at selling it on Marketplace. He fucking hates Meta (good bloke) and said for mates rates he'd give it to me for AUD $200 just so he didn't have to reinstall Facebook.
Fucking sold. Same kit is currently "on special" for $369 on the site he bought it from. Prices are fucked.
I feel like a lot of guys do this "building for their girlfriends" - but I have troubles believing chicks actually into gaming much
For me it was just concidence that I got my work laptop before the prices went up. I cannot imagine what I would be using for the same budget a couple of months later.
I bought a macbook pro m5 max with 128gb ram in June before the most recent 20% price increase
Decided to go for it at that time as I wanted to experiment with running LLMs locally and as a hedge against rising RAM prices
64Gb gang shout out!
Edit: Its now an investment!
I have three 32gb ddr5 PCs, trying to sell one for $600 but crypto bros keep offering $350 because "Chatgpt said so"
Price is 900 for mentioning ai
This must be what it feels like to have bought a house in the 1970s
People who built 32+gb ram systems in 2026:

Yeah... I built my wife a machine with 64 GB of RAM in ~October of 25 right before the prices spiked. Really kicking myself for not going all in and building a NAS setup at that same time. I can't realistically bring myself to purchase 4tb hard drives or ram at this point - it's too damn expensive.
(She's running fedora silver blue)
I really want to go in for a nas, but fuck.... I guess I'll get by with my motley collection of external hard drives...
I got 32tb like a month before shit started blowing up. I didn't really need it at the time but the price was good so I jumped on it. So glad I did.
I built a nas and bought my wife a 64gb laptop eoy 2025. considereing myself lucky.
must have picked up like 6 4tb nvme drives and bunch of rust drives
Yeah...recently wanted to replace my aging 8TB drives in the server. Thought I'd probably get twice as much for the same price or the same way cheaper. Boy was I wrong and sad
And those of us with servers pray every day a stick won't fail. But at least people can talk to robots and make slop on demand...
My NAS is starting to act up and I have no idea what I'm going to do. I've got it all backed up but it's basically deep cold storage (hard drive at a friend's house in a different state). When it goes I'm cooked.
Shit fam, i got 64gb of corsair DDR 3 dimms I ain't even using
256 GB DDR4 here, kinda considering selling some of it now...
Your RAM accidentally became a retirement fund.
Wow, what'd you get all that for? Opening 5+ Chrome tabs?
The pc (server) was used, and the seller asked 100$ to double it from 128 GB to 256 GB.
More space for CFD and path tracing, and for personnal projects. Also it's fun to install games to a ramdisk for a laugh.
...and to finally install all the Cities Skylines and Rimworld mods.
I'll bet the seller is kicking themselves right about now for that.
256GB of DDR5 and a 80TB NAS back in 2025 - although recently my NAS dropped a drive and I had to replace it, which was expensive.
Make sure to get the old one replaced if it's still under warranty.
Unfortunately it wasn't - it was a refurbed server drive
Bought a new laptop in 2022 and the upgrade from 32 to 64gb was laughably cheap compared to the rest of the laptop, so I just did it for the fun of it
Nowadays I think I could buy most of the laptop just from the resale price of the ram
I bought a 22 tb drive the very day that dumb orangutan first threatened tarrifs. The price has more than doubled since then.
Bought 128 gb DDR4 and a 7900 XT... that system quite literally sits in my basement as my main driver is a Linux laptop with an external monitor. So busy with work and school that gaming took a backseat.
I can take it off your hands if you wanna clear up some space in your basement 😃
Dont tell me you also brought storage while it was cheap. At least lie and say you got cooked on that.
My friend always had our hand me down pc's and parts. One day he texted me, saying he wants to build his own pc and send me some infos. I said it looks fine and all. He asked if he should wait for black friday. I told him no, because we're not in amerikkka and it doesn't make a big difference if all. I thought i should build a new pc too, because mine was just as outdated, and bought my parts. By the time i have ordered and picked them up, the guy behind the counter was already like: ufff holy shit, saved some mobey there huh?
Grieve with me, I just lost a ram stick so it's down to 24. Possibly less depending on my Asrock's ability to manage 3 instead of 2 pairs
not nearly that pasty, but ding ding ding
64GB DDR5 and a Rx 7800 xt and 2TB m.2 for less than 1k before windows cut off win10 support. I use it for streaming and factorio and arch isos
Lucky me bought 768GB shortly before it went up. For my server and gaming-rig. Now the ram alone would nearly have paid the whole 2 PCs. Jeez. Fuck you all.
