Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. This is an LGBTQ+-friendly community -- if that is a problem for you, you should leave.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves / tolerates / hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
  • 5. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Language/язык/Sprache
  • This is primarily an English-speaking community. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
  • Comments written in other languages are allowed.
  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.
  • Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
  • We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
  • Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.
  • Β

Please report posts and comments that break these rules!

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

    Commies and Criminals 😎

they do our own propaganda for us

Lets not give this dork any playtime, eh? He gets off on the attention.

MT is going to continue anyway. Might as well show newbies what a crazy loser they are, so at least the posts all get downvoted into oblivion as they post them

That's the attention he gets off on. It's not like he's coming off as sane and tricking people into agreeing with him. He's coming off like someone preaching on a street corner who isn't even facing the right direction.

Just ignore him. If you can't do that, condescend to him. But yeah he's getting off on the attention, so don't feed the troll

Would a criminal not simply pirate a paid operating system?

    [–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 30 points 1 week ago (3 children)

One of the big sticking points stopping me from to switching to Linux is that I don't get to do the incredibly cool crime of stealing from Bill Gates. I considered switching to RHEL, but stealing from IBM isn't quite as cool.

    [–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago

Pfft, look at this guy, who wants to buy only genuine IBM PCs and not PC-clones! I bet he pays for his usenet subscription, and sends his extra AOL free trial CDs back so they can be distributed to users who need it.

    :P

You steal the data BG could've gathered if you used his OS
    And marketshare
    And (eventually) attention from developers

Dude tried to argue with me that ECC memory is why windows is better.

    Yes, he's that stupid.

He kept trying to argue that anything open source is "commie garbarge."

You can see me completely destroy all of his arguments and he runs away like the MAGA bitch he is. Pathetic.

    [–] auzy1@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

Pretty sure I responded to the same post.

He started saying Linux needed ecc for a while, windows didn't, which is absolutely ridiculous given that a lot of Mac's needed ecc, and windows server explicitly recommends ecc.

My Linux Android phone doesn't use ecc either, or people's Samsung tv

    [–] percent@infosec.pub 10 points 1 week ago (3 children)

He said that on Lemmy, an open source platform, hosted mostly (I assume) on Linux servers? Brilliant

My Linux user is not a criminal, they maybe conspiracy theorist, liar, commie, cheater, criminal but they are not a pornstar.

    Edit: forgot conspiracy theorist

    [–] auzy1@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

    Oh.. But they CAN be.

I recall at one of the conferences (or during), maybe 20 years, someone was apparently selling a porn video training people how to use nmap.

Doing the gayest of crimes on Linux

    [–] funkajunk@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

Not gay-crimes! Those are the worst ones!

    Unisox united!

    [–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 24 points 1 week ago (2 children)

If Linux users were commonly cheaters, you'd think games' anti-cheats would work on Linux.

OOP after shooting L1T Wendell: "What? It was obvious! He's the red commie. Watch, he'll turn red any second now! ...Aaaaaaany second now. See, red! No-wait, that's blood."

    [–] Simon_Shitewood@lemmy.ml 22 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I might be a commie, a criminal, and a pornstar, but I am NOT a cheater.

Suggested it might be more fun praising an OS you actually lke, instead of ~500 posts on something you hate. Am now banned

I feel like this is probably a disinformation bot. Why would a human being have such strong feelings about an OS that allows people to circumvent corporate control/surveillance on their PC?

    [–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

Yeah, it's either that or someone who has decided their special interest is hating linux. If it's the user that I think it is, when I looked at their history earlier, pretty much every post of theirs is over the top anti-linux.

Though I am glad to see that most of the accounts I suspect of astroturfing are generally downvoted to the negatives here. Though I do wonder if this place will end up being a training ground for propaganda that works on the segments of the population that are highly represented here that don't seem as susceptible to the shit that would get eaten up on FB or gain some traction on reddit. Actually, windows love probably does well on reddit since it's made up of people who haven't gotten tired enough of the enshitification to leave and are probably doing the same with windows.

That... might even be why they enshitified it so much for no apparent benefit at the cost of many users that contributed positively. Those contributions might not have been seen as so positive if they responded to marketing bullshit negatively.

LOL This person is a bit unhinged, and cannot recognize that Linux distros are viable for just about everyone who wants to manage their computer. And not have a big corporation interfere with what they can and cannot do with their computer. Cheaters, criminals, and all sorts use a variety of OS.

I just happen to be a geek that enjoys Linux, specifically, Garuda Linux. A great distro.

Oh wow our first beef community! Thats awesome!

    [–] auzy1@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

    Not much competition really.

This is someone who says "linux users don't have jobs", but on another hand, spends all day making stupid (and occasionally bigoted) memes, like the weird one about pronouns.

Someone who spends this much time attacking an operating system, probably doesn't have much of an exciting life (and, they probably aren't getting invited to anything, anywhere)

    [–] Natanox@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 1 week ago

Reads LLM generated, honestly. It's probably a troll who spends the whole day prompting some unrestricted models and losing touch with reality.

    [–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

I admit I’ve tried gently poking into OOP’s psyche and they do genuinely seem committed to the crabs-in-a-bucket crusade against Linux. Like the constant hate boner with zero sources seems like it has to be exhausting. Shame they refuse to use that energy for anything positive but Β―\(ツ)/Β― their life I guess lol

Not that some of the "they're simply*" options are entirely incorrect for me, But nerd and/or geek is definitely a more apt descriptor.
