Children often just want sweets and unhealthy snacks, and it’s up to adults to make sure they get the nutrition their little bodies require. If a grown ass adult decides they don’t want to eat something, though, they likely have tried it and have their reasons for avoiding it. It’s really nobody else’s damned business.

I love onions but OP needs to fuck right off with dictating how other folks should deal with food.

If you judge what other people eat

You should try: Growing the hell up

[–] Seppo@sopuli.xyz 7 points 20 hours ago

Nah. I'll judge the fuck out of dudes pushing 40 who still can't cook anything other than instant ramen.

You know what. I should. I should grow up. I already love onions. But this sends a message.

[–] Hiro8811@lemmy.world 74 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Fuck you I'll live however the fuck I want

[–] stickyprimer@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago

Absolutely. I would say that not liking onions is a bit of an illusion though. They really are in everything and are so elemental to cooking. I think if people understood this better they wouldn’t fear onions so much. Sometimes fear of onions is also part of a generalized “zero seasoning” palette common among some older white Americans, where even black pepper is considered “spicy” and most food is totally flavorless and usually cooked to a pulp. It’s not about growing up… this palette is just missing out on so much happiness in the world. Being just a tiny bit brave with food is a wonderful decision to make in life.

Love onions, but they give me migraines

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 4 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

That is the most unfair thing I have heard today. I remember getting that list of potential migraine trigger and thinking it was every single food or habit anyone could eat or do. I know they are trying to make you feel some control but it always felt so blamey. Mine were mostly hormonal and not something I could fix but now managed with menopause plus a small dose of estrogen & progesterone, the same amount every day so no swings. Which leaves relaxation as my only remaining trigger. A coffee in the evening on Friday usually prevents that.

But onion? That is hard. They are so foundational to cooking.

[–] fireweed@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

How is relaxation a trigger? I've never heard of that and am genuinely curious, because usually triggers are the opposite: lack of rest, overexertion, etc.

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Mine always started with my period before, and I almost couldn't get one at any other time. But that time of month is a sharp drop in energy and progesterone, I think the relaxation is the same sort of thing - a sharp drop in stress will trigger a migraine, they come while I am sleeping.

I expect that if it were possible to be relaxed at all times it would not be all migraine, it's the change that is the problem.

Did have to give up fasting, that always did also result in a migraine but again, it only would start while I was asleep.

[–] fireweed@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

Interesting, I wonder if it's a stress hormone withdrawal thing (kind of like caffeine withdrawal, another common headache/migraine trigger). I hope you are able to find a good balance! Not being able to relax sounds like it's own kind of hell.

[–] fireweed@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

Both raw and cooked? I've heard some people can tolerate cooked but not raw. Either way that's a rough deal; onions are in so many dishes.

If you don't like onions you should try cooking them in butter on low heat for 30-45 minutes until they're a deep amber and mixing them with sour cream, a bit of mayo, salt and pepper, and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Boom, caramelized onion dip.

I loooooove onions.

But... FODMAPs... Ugh.

No more onions or garlic or mushrooms for me except for a once in a while splurge and regret.

If god gives you onions, squeeze them for onion juice!

Also, fuck lemon-cutting ninjas.

[–] Tikiporch@lemmy.world 22 points 1 day ago (14 children)

Onions have their place, and it's diced so fine they're practically molecular.
