Now this is a 20R Toyota I'd do borderline illegal things to own. This would be worth spending some money on. I'd probably swap in a 22R, or even EV swap it

Guy not kidding. They asking 40k for cars made in the 1980s. Hell even 1990 models. Fucking crazy.
I read that last one in Mr. Regular voice.
The US used vehicle market is a fucked up clown show. In the EU, the prices are more realistic, especially with the smaller motors. The reason, the piss poor US income distribution and astronomical new car prices combined to create this mess.
Programs like cash for clunkers also helped end cheap wheels for a whole generation. Lots of good motors were locked up intentionally :c
old man anecdote: my first car was a toyota celica, 10 years old, this was back in 99'. it cost $500, bought in the classified ads, and the deal was sealed with a firm handshake and a passing of legal tender in unwashed hands.
that same car nowadays would run me 8k.
I just Kelly blue booked my 07 jeep compass… it’s worth a whole $600. I spent more then that on the tires
It’s often the upkeep that really determines its value, long-term.
1999 Dodge Durango I inherited.
Literally every single time I started her up, I had one more thing break, or stop working. We replaced the windshield motor on the driver side 6 times but you needed it because the AC didn't work.
I wonder if there were power surges or some other electrical problem that kept on killing the motors.
Why?greed or wha
Boomers.. Everything they do, they think they deserve a profit
I'm not an expert, and I'm just spitballing here, but I'd say it's some combo of the following:
- cars last a lot longer, a 200k mile car still might have a couple years of solid life left
- inflation makes 2000$ now 4000$
- everyone is hard up for cash and needs to sell stuff at the most possible amount of money
- boomers are famous for considering everything they touch to increase in value
- a ton of used cars are off the market due to gov shenanigans
- the typical car is much pricier now, so the typical used car is also pricier
anyone got any others?
Boomers were my first thought too.
Particularly car enthusiasts often overvalue their stuff, and attack everything they won't benefit from (like EV's, or electrification).
gov shenanigans
Was the "Cash for Clunkers" thing one of them? When that happened, I remembered wondering how it might affect the used car market later... But then I forgot to check until just now 🙈
Yeah I'm sure it was.
It's a catch 22 though, the clunkers being removed were heavy polluters. I have a 60s C10 and that thing pollutes like crazy. Looks beautiful though.
Other issues are the CAFE standards that motivated large expensive trucks and the general social change towards large SUVs. I hate those big crossovers, my wife has one and it's a POS.
the clunkers being removed were heavy polluters
and got replaced with trucks that were twice their size, resulting in zero net gain
